troy, if you just want to disable the automatic startup, it is simple. open msn messenger, select tools-then options, select the tab marked "general" unclick the box next to "run messenger when windows starts". reboot. messenger will no longer autostart. i do not recommend deleting msn messenger as it supports other functions. stevew220@hotmail.com

Troy: To keep the messenger from starting on boot-up,go to start, run,it should show "msconfig" in the box,if not, type it in there.Click the start-up tab and unclick the msmgs box and then either re-start or re-start later when you finish.

The advice below does not work. Messenger is NOT listed in startup. I have gone to Messenger and made sure it is not setup to start at startup...but it does anyway. It doest NOT show on my task bar. It does NOT show in Windows Task Manager. It does NOT show in MSCONFIG startup... My only feeling is that it is a recent change to my OS via one the dozens and dozens of updates that are always always always "needed for security reasons", done covertly by MS to force us to use this forever annoying pieces of intrusive garbage. : /
