Defragging was a waste of time. Since you were formatting anyway, that removes everything. If your system is relatively old, you could have a hard drive translation software that was put on it to overcome a size limit. If so, XP gets very distressed about such software. It can be fixed, but we need more info before giving you unnecessary information. For example, Western Digital calls theirs Data Lifeguard Tools and Maxtor calls theirs PowerMax. Other HDD mfr tools can be had at their support web sites. Run the non-destructive tests, which are similar to the scandisk or checkdisk programs that come with Windows. The advantage here is that you can run these diagnostic tools from a floppy or two before attemtping to load an OS, and IMO these tools should be more thorough and more accurate than what comes with Windows.
