Show Desktop
Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at 10:59 am Posted by Sandy
(12 messages posted)
I recently posted this message:
"After we loaded a game (SimTown) into our computer, the Show Desktop icon disappeared
and the SimTown icon replaced it. Now "Show Desktop" no longer works. I've tried
deleting the shortcut and replacing it by creating a new file but when the shortcut
comes back it's still the SimTown icon. Can anyone sort this mess out?"
and got this response:
Open notepad. Copy the following text into it and save it as: Show Desktop.scf
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
kbar]
Command
[Tas =ToggleDesktop"
However, I've already tried that a couple of times and the command still doesn't
work. Somehow the "Show Desktop" command has become mixed up with the game SimTown.
The "file type" for Show Desktop comes up as SimTown Sounds. There is a file that
might be involved in all this - DeIsL2.isu. When I first tried to uninstall SimTown
the computer said it couldn't uninstall because this file wasn't available. But when
I checked manually, it was there. I have since managed to uninstall SimTown.
I realize this might be too complicated for this forum but I'm giving it another
try....

Sandy...How did you uninstall?? To properly uninstall a program that isn't listed
in the add remove is to run the uninstall manually.. by going to start/run and typing
c:\windows\uninst.exe -f"[Location of .isu file]"
Example:
C:\Windows\uninst.exe -f"C:\Program Files\Sim Town\DeIsL1.isu"
This will open the uninstall shield, and remove the program properly...maybe you
just need to re-install and then properly uninstall it again?

If what you posted for Show Desktop.scf is what you actually have it's no wonder.
It should be:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Steve - I don't remember how I uninstalled last time, but just for fun I reinstalled
SimTown and uninstalled again. Then I deleted the Show Desktop icon and recreated
Show Desktop.scf as per Bobstur's post. The Show Desktop command reappeared on my
task bar as a SimTown icon and is still "Type: SimTown Sounds".
Perhaps I'll have to learn to live with it.....

Sandy, You don't have to live with it.. sounds like a the sims town changed a file
association...open Windows explorer/ choose tools/ folder options/ file types...scroll
down and see if you find an association listed for .scf and post back what you
find there...

Took me a few minutes to find as I don't have it associated with any thing on my
computer...this is it's proper association:
scf=SHCmdFile

Thanks for the encouragement! According to the Folder Options there are no .scf filetypes.
The file does exist however. Interestingly, since my last post the Show Desktop icon
has changed from the SimTown icon to something else. It still doesn't work however...

Sandy, go back to folder options/ file types click on new...type scf into the box
and then click on advanced.. another box should show you it's association which should
be Windows Explorer....Okay after you check that...are you sure you are saving the
showdesktop.scf correctly?? by default it will save as showdesktop.scf.txt...unless
you look to the next line down from where your inputing the filename and click on
the down arrow and choose All Files before you save it???

Thank you! It works! The association was SimTown Sounds --- I changed it to Windows
Explorer and it now works the way it's supposed to. I'm very happy to have it back!
Thanks for the help.

and finally the solution!

Found the solution dude!
ok so here it goes:
1. in a new text file type this in:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.scf]
@="SHCmdFile"
"ZAMailSafeExt"="zm5"
2. save the file as "fix.reg" without the quotes
3.where ever you saved it double click it
and say yes to allow the registry to be updated.
4.Now try that desktop.scf shorcut
if you don't have it here it goes again
save all of the following in a text file
name "showdesktop.scf" without the quotes
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
5.double click showdesktop.scf
TADA! reply if this helps please.
no seriously guys the least you could
do I mean come on!

Works like a charm, and only takes about 8 seconds. This has been driving me nuts--and
I gather many others too. Thanks!

SimTown vs. show desktop - one more time.
In trying to apply the solution, I'm getting:
Cannot import fix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only
import binary registry files from within the registry editor.
So, then, I launch regedit and attempt the import, only to get the same message,
more or less. Anyone willing to take one more try at this issue?
OS is XP Pro SP2 and all up to date.
Thanks,
ccStarsky
