Search for the file "config.nt" on your xp machine
Open with notepad
Enter your old win95 or 98 "config.sys" statements:
Save the file
Set the "properties" of the game icon to select the operation system you wish XP
to emulate(95,98 etc)

May I suggest googling up "DOSBox?" Worked great for me on my Star Control game.
