Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

I have a question about Getting
Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers:
I have 3 computers on a "Network Everywhere" wireless router. 1=Win98 wired desktop,
1=Win98se wired desktop, 1=WinXP. on a wireless notebook
I checked and double checked all the info in the Network w/the TCP/IP etc. I created
the Network setup disk on WinXP & ran it on the Win98 units. My probmem is: The Win98
sees the other 2 computers. Win98se & WinXP only sees itself. Sometimes I see a computer
but it cannot be accessed. Any suggestions?

I am going crazy, with exactly the same problem. I have a wired network using a
Linksys Router. Two computer are currently on the network, one with Win98 the other
with WindowsXP Home Edition. I have had someone back several times to redo it as
my husband's computer cannot see to access the internet, my computer would be the
server, so must be on for him to use the network. He has not been able to get on
for 2 1/2 months. I have checked and rechecked the settings, everything appears
to be fine, I can see his computer on the network but he cannot get online and the
guy that did this no longer returns our calls. I have tried everything with no results.
I called another network place and was told that XP is the fault, which I do not
believe. If you have an answer or have found one please let me know. wakunkel@earthlink.net.
Thanks.

Do you get any error messages on your 98 PC when you are booting it up? Anything
that says anything about a conflict?

No Ricky I do not get any error messages. In fact, even though I don't see the other
computers, when I shut down I get two messages that the other computers are connected.

Try creating a shortcut on your desktop with the IP address of the PC you cannot
see, eg, \\192.168.0.3

Thanks for responding Jim.
Right now I have the IP addresses set to "Obtain an IP address automatically". How
do I find the IP address for the computer?

You can set the shortcut to the name of your network PC, eg, \\jim's computer.

I get a "The file \\computer name cannot be found." error. I also did a computer
search with "Find Computers" and I got a "0" found.

Can you give your PCs individual IP addresses eg. 192.168.0.2 3 and 4. Subnet
mask 255.255.255.0 and ensure you have set up your wireless card on the XP PC correctly, wireless
networking.

I did as you suggested Jim. Results: Icould not get on the Web with either of the
3 computers (even after resetting cable modem & router). Win98 still saw Win98se
& WinXP. Win98se only saw Win98 and got an error message "The system detected a conflict
for IP address 192.168.0.2 with the system having hardware address 00.06.25.13:D2:BE."
which is the XP address. WinXP saw only the Win98 but could not access it and had
an IP address conflict error message also. I had to set the IP addresses back to
"automatically" in order to get back on the Web.
I cannot put anymore time into this right not but I really appreciate your help.
I would like to contact you next week to continue if it's OK with you?

I'll be glad to try and help anytime. A final suggestion, change the IP addresses
to a higher range, 192.168.0.20 etc. and check the Router's address. Cheers,
Jim

How do I check the router's address and will the cable modem have to be adjusted
in anyway due to the address change? Al

There should be instructions with your router, telling you how to configure it. You
can then give your other PCs IP addresses in the same range.

I would just use DHCP so each attached computer gets a network address automatically.
At home I also do not use passwords. This sometimes confuses things. Make sure
everyone has the same WORKGROUP name. On the XP you should be configured to use
file and printer sharing. Usually if you want to share a directory you have to specifically
set up XP to share with the other computers. All computers should also have a different
computer name.

Thanks for responding John.
I am familiar with TCP/IP but can you explain the procedure for using DHCP?
Thanks,
Al
