Too many OS choices at boot

I just finished formatting my h/d (partitioned into C and D drives). Re-installed
XP Professional. At mid BOOT, I'm taken to the choice of using either 'Microsoft
Windows XP' or just plain 'Microsoft Windows'. When I chose the Win XP. everything
works fine. When I chose the MSFT Windows choice, I get the C>: prompt and nothing
else. I've re-installed this version of XP Pro a couple of times to get rid of some
bugs, and have always gotten a smooth boot afterward - until now! How do I get rid
of that second 'Microsoft Windows' choice of OS, so the machine will just smoothly
boot through to Windows XP? I've reformatted the hard drives twice now to see if
I missed something the first time... Any ideas? Thank you, John

You probably had it set to dual boot for a whle. Sometimes the boot.ini file picks
up old info and shows extra options. You can edit it by using the the System icon
in the Control Panel. Advanced Tab and in the Startup and Recovery section (where
you can choose default OS to boot) there is an edit button which allows you to edit
the boot.ini. My single OS boot.ini looks like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

I agree, you need to edit BOOT.INI. In particular look at was is below the line
with "[operating systems]". Each line thereafter repreents one potential boot choice.
Each can be a separate operating system, or they can be variations of the same operating
system. To clarify the last statement: I have XP, XP safe mode, and the XP recovery
console as individual boot choices. However, it would be more common to have something
like XP, and 98.

Bob B and Bob H, thank you very much for your help.. That was exactly what I needed
to do to clear that other Windows OS choice. Well done, all the best, John
