XP tracert & pathping return IP address but not computer name

I've come across a problem with tracert and pathping on our xp pro - service pack
1 - workstations. These systems were previously running Win98, and were recently
fully re-installed with their hard drives reformatted.
When I tracert or pathping from these XP workstations to the IP addresses of the
other workstations (both Win98 and XP Pro) on our LAN, the reply displays the destination
computer's IP address, but not its computer name.
When I tracert or pathping our servers (netware6 & Win2000), they *do* return their
computer name along with their IP address. Only the other workstations fail to display
the computer name with the IP address.
If I tracert or pathping my own system's IP, or the IP address of any Internet website,
it *does* return the node name.
Our Win98 workstations have never had this problem. They return the computer name
and IP address normally.
A co-worker copied the tracert.exe and pathping.exe files from a Win2000 computer
to an XP workstation (renaming the files to tracert2000.exe and pathping2000.exe,
to prevent them being automatically restored to the XP versions by the OS), and when
those are run from the XP systems, we get back replies with the computer names and
IP addresses.
I've verified our HOSTS file exists and looks correct. Really, since it works with
the Win2000 versions of the .exe files, I can't imagine there's anything wrong with
our LAN or server setup.
I spent quite a long time searching Microsoft's support sites, and general searches
of the web for any other reports of this issue, with no luck.
Has anyone heard of a known bug in the XP Pro install disk versions of the tracert.ex
and pathping.exe files, or of a bug with these files resulting from the online Windows
Update for XP service pack 1?
Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your time.

did you try to check if your server/workstation support reverse lookup. Id you are
in a DNS-Active directory network, the reverse lookup is needed to resolve Ip to
computer name. I not sure if this help, but no hurn to check
