Question about 'Special folders no longer work like they should'

I have a question about Special folders no longer work like they should:

Under WindowsXP, the following directory C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ is used to keep all cookies but also contains a subdirectory, "Content.IE5", used to temporary store some files automatically downloaded by internet when you click some links on a web page. I have this subdirectory missing, therefore some of my internet downloads fail : the file is downloaded to 99% then a window pops up saying that : C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\XXXXXX\FileName could not be found where XXXXXX is a weird directory name. There is no way to create any new directory under "Temporary Internet Files" And if a create a new user the C:\Documents and Settings\New UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ is created but not the Content.IE5 subdirectory. Does anyone know how to correct this By the way I am using Internet Explorer (V6.0) Thanks to anyone for helping me to solve this pb

11/25/03 - Tweak UI Version 2.10.0.0 provides no function to repair this problem! *In my system, the ONLY user that cannot see "Content.IE5" folder in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Current User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\" is the Current User. The CurrentUser can see other users "Content.IE5" but not his/her own! *This problem is not resolved via registy key \ShowSuperHidden = 1

Good Buddy Jesse, I know this is gonna be of no help to you but, I have resolved to not let this thing bother me anymore as I know how to get around the problem! If you register for the LockerGnome Forums and/or do a search for this >> "Content.IE5" You will see two posts with a few work arounds! But neither is of help to me! In addition, forcefully going to this folder (even though it is invisible) by typing the exact folder name (such as: C:\Documents and Settings\"Your Name"\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5) and then undoing the check box for Read Only or then going and giving Your Name Full Security Priviliges (as it should be) does nothing to alleviate the problem as the next time you open WindowsExplorer, it puts them back to the way they are (read only and then it double shows this folder with the same EXACT name TWICE)! You see, I may not know the answer to the question but I surely know that there is a work around to be able to manipulate it using the direct "Go To" command to this folder from the ToolBar! So just write it down and take solace that you may not know the answer but you sure can get to it still to delete contents! I have seen elsewhere how to relocate the TempInternetFiles folder to another location but I will not do this as I don't want it to cause other tertiary problems in my system! Add to the above the fact that I rarely use InternetExplorer (I am a Mozilla fan for the past 2 years), you can see why I no longer pay any attention to such minor nits that microsoft has insisted on pestering me with! There are additional help files such as changing the size of the *.dat file and all that jazz and there are scripts that you can write to delete contents w/o physically going to it but all this is for naught only if you want it to bother you some more or you are in the same exact problematic boat that I am in with is Content.IE5 folder! Don't fret it (like me) and just jot down the exact location (as I told you above) and every once in a while you can go there do the clean up if you cannot automated with wipe history tool in IE6! Dig? I am sorry for the length of this reply but there is one more additional knowledge I have come across (but one that has not cured my ill with this Content.IE5 folder) and it is as follows: BUT REMEMBER THIS DOES NOT GET RID OF THE PROBLEM IN MY SYSTEM: -------------------------------------------------------------- Want to See All The Hidden Files and Folders? Did you know that even when you've selected to view hidden files and folders in >> Explorer's Tools >> Folder Options >> View Advanced settings, there are some files that still won't be displayed? These are system files and normally you'd have no reason to access, change or delete them (and doing so could cause big problems if you don't know what you're doing). But if you'd like to see everything that's there, you can make Windows treat these like regular hidden files so that the settings to view hidden files and folders will cause them to display in Explorer. You can do so by editing the registry. ? First, navigate to the following registry key: HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced ? In the right pane, double click the entry ShowSuperHidden. ? Set the data value to 1. If you later decide you want these "super hidden" files to stay out of sight, set the data value back to 0. -----------------------------------------------------------

I have the same problem as u guys, when i check the properties of Temporary Internet Files in Local Settings it tells me there are 26 folders and some 2500 files in it which make up about 1Gb!!! When i look in the folder there is nothing there! I have no idea how to get rid of this, i tried to copy the same folder from another user but that just gave me some weird error about mapping, very annoying. If anyone has any further suggestions as to how get rid of this i would really appreciate it.

Hello Everybody, I faced similar problems and i just managed to solve it ... For some weird reason the CONTENT.IE5 folder in the Temporary Internet files dissapeared. That made it impossible to "open" files directly from the browser (IE6) but I had to save them locally to view them. I tried to copy the CONTENT.IE5 folder from other users in the PC but no success. The way I managed to pull this thrugh is strange but it work. In IE6 you go for Tools>Internet options>Temporary Files>Settings>move folder If you relocate it in the same folder it sould be in "C:\Documents and Settings\name of current user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\" the Folder CONTENT.IE5 and related subfolders is regenerated and all things are fine! Hope this helps ...

The registry key for Show Super Hidden was already set at 1 when I found it. Further down, however, was another entry named, Super Hidden. It also had a value of 1. I changed it to 0 and left Show Super Hidden set as it already was, at 1. This, without a restart, immediately showed all Temporary Internet Files and cookies, so I assume it worked for all super hidden files. Many thanks to RandomBox for the great lead!

In XP, Open IE and goto Tools on Menu Bar, under Temp Internet Files, click on Settings. In the Settings Box, click on Move Folder. To reset the Temporary Internet Files Folder and the Associated Content.IE5 folders, just set the move to C:\Documents and Settings\%user%\Local Settings then click OK. This will reset the Temporary Internet Files Folder and the Content.IE5 folder with the Index.dat file as well.

While recently browsing the Internet for information on a spyware issue, McAfee reported
a Trojan had been found in a subdirectory of Content.IE5 (the internet cache). I
tried to delete, quarantine and clean using McAfee, but was unable. For whatever
reason, Microsoft considers the current user folders to be Hidden System folders.

They are listed in the registry as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Cache\Paths\

Since we know these folders exist, along with the location, they can be displayed
using a few simple DOS commands as follows:

The following is a step by step procedure should you be unfamiliar with DOS.

To open a dos window, go to: Start>Run> and type "Cmd" (without quotations) and
Enter

This should open up a dos window in the root directory of C drive. if not in the
root, type:

CD\ and Enter to take you back to the root of C drive

Type:

CD Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\

and press Enter. Note the space between CD and Documents. Also substitute {user
name} with the actual name of your user directory, without braces.

To change the attributes of files and folders which are subdirectories off the Local
Settings, type:

attrib –r -h -s /D /S *.* and Enter.

Note the space between each group of characters (6 spaces total). I suggest –r even
though it may be unnecessary as some files on my computer were read only, (possibly
set by the Trojan). This will turn off the read only attribute if set.

You should now be able to return to Windows Explorer and browse to the Content.IE5
folder and the 4 IE Cache subfolders along with its index.dat and desktop.ini files.
If you wish to continue in DOS, use the following commands in the DOS window.

Type: DIR - and Enter

One of the directories displayed should be Temporary Internet Files

Type: CD Temporary Internet Files and Enter

Type: DIR and Enter

The listing should now include the Content.IE5 Folder

Type: CD Content.IE5 and Enter

Type: DIR and Enter

Assuming the cache is configured for 4 folders in the registry, this will display
the 4 IE Cache folders, along with the Index.dat and desktop.ini files. You can
use the above listed procedures to navigate to the individual folders and file lists
and delete files using the following command:

DEL {filename}   Note space between DEL and {filename}

Provided the folder is empty, folders can be deleted by going up one level in the
tree structure and typing:

RD {foldername}   Note space between RD and {foldername}

Use caution when deleting files and removing directories using DOS, especially if
using wildcards such as *.*. This will delete all files in the current folder.
Once deleted, files and folders cannot be recovered.

An excellent freeware program, CCleaner (Crap Cleaner), available from:

http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

can be used to do this cleanup for you. After you run CCleaner, it tends to leave
the Content.IE5 folder, subfolders and files accessible with Windows Explorer, until
they are reset to System status, possibly on reboot.

Hope this is of some help. It worked for me.

Thank you Ted, thank you. My Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ had disappeared. I was sooo frustrated and then I saw your DOS post. I followed all your instructions and it worked!!! It really worked!! My Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ folder and .IE5 file appeared:-)
