XP and card reader UCR-61s2b problems

Having a problem with Windows XP and Desknote's card reader UCR-61S2B. This is an internal 6 in 1 card reader which connects to the internal usb socket. I was told that XP would not be a problem but when clicked on "My Computer" it shows the drives but when I insert a MMC or MS card into slot it doesn't read. I downloaded the driver online just to make sure but still does not work. Now when opening up XP a message comes up that it don't reconise the Gigabite 7VAXP motherboard. Any ideas

This card reader is manufactured by ECS and its firmware is locked to work with only certain mobos. I ran into same problem with MSI board. Even thought pins match to USB header, the reader will only work on mobo it "recognizes" from firmware. I noticed that several of ECS's new boards have a dedicated "card reader header". I suppose someone could hack the firmware, but it's not going to be me. ECS makes another reader, UCR-61s, that is identical except for the restrictive firmware. I just consider myself SOL with the "2b" version.

OK....so its not just me!! Good to know. I just built a new PC with an Asus A7V8X-X board and AMDxp2500 and......the same 61s2b card reader....and mine doesnt work right either. I lost track of how many times i installed and unistalled the driver. Im using 2000pro which has version 1.7 driver in it for this reader. I also uninstalled it and downloaded the 1.8v driver from ECS website but same result. It works with a Compact flash card but wont with a sony memory stick. All 4 drive letters appear in my computer but say to insert disk when a memory card is installed. I get no warning messages when using the w2000 pro driver but when i install the driver from ECS website i get a message on boot up that says "warning the card reader does not recognize your motherboard." Glad to know its not just me and im not a total moron for not being able to install a simple device correctly. Nice of ECS to inform resellers of the compatibility issue...and for resellers to NOT inform retail customers. I cant imagine we're the only 2 people who have ever had this problem. I'm returning mine now that i know for sure its not just me.

Hey guys, I've got the same problem, too. Just to let you know you are not allone. My Motherboard is an EPOX 8K5A series, and the problems are the same. It s***s that they provide card readers without any warning that they just work on special boards. This company is deleted from my supplier list.

Has anyone looked inside their reader yet? I bought a '-61s2b' before seeing these postings - drat. Inside my reader there is a large chip with legs on all 4 sides, labeled NEoDIo ND3052 LC,, with two 9 pin dil headers along two opposing edges. There are two jumpers on position 2&3 of one header, and none on the other header. There is also a smaller four sided chip with a label on it reading UCR61S and 0CB1, which is probably the read only memory chip. My guess is that the 61s2b variant is just a 61s model with different jumpers settings and/or software. Hopefully, it is just a change of jumpers, alongside the big chip. So, has anyone out there got a -61s model card reader which they would be wiling to open up and take a picture of the innards and compare the chip descriptions with those given above ? (Purely in the interests of science ...) If anyone wants a copy of the picture of my card readers innards, please contact me separately and I will send them one (.jpg, 61k). I have had no luck with ECS(UK) so far, but live in hope. I asked for a list of compatible motherboards.

I bought one card reader some days ago at ebay. Unfortunately I have no manual and no driver disk. It does not work with a Win2k system (motherboard: Asrock K7VT2) and also not with my WinXP system (motherboard: it think it's one from ASUS). So I opened it. Inside it looks very similar to the discription of DaveW. One chip is labeled UCR61S 0CB1, so I do not know if I have a UCR-61S or a UCR-61S 2B device. When I install the drivers for UCR-61S 2B then it says that the device is not compatible with my motherboard.

At http://www.ecsusa.com/support/CardReader.pdf they say:
>>> Q7: Why can’t my motherboard support this card reader even after I have finished the installation of the driver? A7: This card reader device is locked for some motherboards. Users have to inquire the motherboard’s vendor for a valid motherboard ID. <<< What does this mean: "Users have to inquire the motherboard’s vendor for a valid motherboard ID." ? How can I do that? And what is is good for? - I want to say: If I have information about valid motherboard IDs, how can I reach that the card reader copes with my motherboard?

I have a couple of these too. Mine came bundled with a couple of PC Chips mobos. I don't have those boards anymore since they were sold. I guess a lot of resellers had the same idea I had. The sold the mobos and kept the card readers as an extra. I guess I'll leave in the closet until we figure out a work around.

Well damn, i figured that since theres a patch to make it work in linux, it wouldnt be that hard to make it work in XP. But i have searched and searched and haven't found a single solution to get it working.

I (and 2 of my friends) bought this card reader (UCR-61S2B) too and we have the same
problems in Windows (it doesn't recognise an inserted card when its not run off a
ECS motherboard).
We opened it yesterday and found 2 rows of jumpers, 1 on each side of the chip labeled
"NeoDio". I changed the jumpers around to se if it made any change - so far without
any luck :-/
Has someone been more lucky than my ?

Yeeeeehaaaa - it works :-D I borrowed a SD-card from a friend and at least that works, but if it works why shouldn't the rest of the reader functions work... ? Is it just a driver that does not check what motherboard is used or does the installer somehow flash a new firmware into the card readers eeprom ?

I found a driver that should work for the ucr-61s2b card reader (Access) with no
lockout on any board. It worked for me on a previously locked out motherboard.
I'm running Windows ME but it should also work in XP.

Download the file here:
http://www.tecchannel.de/cardreader/

The driver that worked for me is called:
ucr61s2bxp.zip

I had some trouble at first identifying my card reader. One clue I had was the word "access" on the faceplate. Turns out the unit is made by Elite Computer Systems (ECS) and will only work on certain motherboards unless the right software is used to unlock it. I believe this will work for win98/ME/XP and possibly others. Download the drivers from this site: http://www.tecchannel.de/cardreader/ The software needed is: ucr61s2bxp.zip I hope this works for you. Bob M.

Hi there. I have had the same problem with a ucr-61s2b card reader I purchased just recently. Unfortunately the driver update didn't solve the problem so I am packing it up and sending it back. Can anyone recommend a card reader that will work on most motherboards? Mine is a Compaq 041Ch Philip.

Here's more details. I've loaded this driver on several different brand
motherboards Using Windows 98 or ME and its worked well.

First of all, unzip the file ucr61s2bxp.zip to an empty directory of your
choosing. Then go to that directory and you should find a subdirectory called
BIOSUNLOCK_AP_1_9E. Go to the subdirectory and you will find the setup
files. The drivers are in subdirectories labeled Win98 (must be 2nd edition, also
works for ME) and Win2k.

I've found that I had to load the drivers first and the run the setup program on
some computers. To do this, go to the control panel and use "Add New
Hardware". Make sure your card reader is physically installed on your USB
first.

The unit is plug and play so it should show up on the list when windows does a
plug and play search. If its not on the list, it may not be installed properly or
the
USB port you've connected it to may not be active.

Highlight the card reader on the list and answer yes. Then click on "update
driver" and manually point windows to the correct driver for your operating
system and click "OK". Windows should install the correct driver at this point.

You can check by going to "my Computer". You should see 4 new drives.

Now go back to the BIOSUNLOCK_AP_1_9E directory and double click on
setup. This loads the software to complete your drive installation. You should
now be able to read and write files to your card reader drives.

I hope this explanation helps.

Hi I have a Hardware Tweak for UCR-61SB2!!! If somebody want use this Device with Win XP SP2, and all other Windows OS call me. It take only 5 minutes all you need is a screwdriver to open the device, little cable (Soundcard --> CD-Rom cable) and this driver: http://www.lubino.sk/data/drivers/ucr61s2bunlockedbeta.zip . For the Hardware Tweak my E-Mail: isi*s-direktnet.de. for my work to find this Tweak i want only 3€ per Paypal and i will send you the information for the tweak. * = @

I think that for hardware or software one could/should pay, but knowledge shold be free! Anyway, I had the same problem, same reader installed automatically on WinXP, but was unable to read SD card, while was OK with CF. I downloaded this driver: www.lubino.sk/data/drivers/ucr61s2bunlockedbeta.zip I run it and no other thing I had to do since reader started work perfectly. No need for hardware hack. Ciao U.

Look here, seems to be a driver which also unlocks the card reader to use it in other boards, not only ECS and PCCHIPS. http://www.carletonmacgregor.com/html/ecs_ucr-61s2b_flash_drive.html I did not try it yet.

Hi,

DriverGuide still has the driver available. Here is the link:

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=122984

They will ask you to sign in or register if you're not already a member. It's worth
registering for, I use it all the time and it's free. Bob

My reader has always worked when installing the 1.9e software. However, it seems that when there has been other usb installations, the reader is dropped and won't work until the software is reinstalled. I have had this reader thru numerous motherboard types and processors with the same problem. Now on an new duo ECS mb. Software works for a while and then quits and have to reninstall toread SD card. It is 2009 now. Hal
