Question about 'How do I use the built-in CD burning in Windows XP?'

I have a question about How do I use the built-in CD burning in Windows XP?:

Greetings. I am running Windows XP Home Edition on a Gateway computer with Pentium IV. Recently, I reinstalled Windows from the original disks that came with my computer. Everything seems fine except that when I try to move files to a blank CD, the CD Writing Wizard that used to appear no longer appears, and I get an error message saying "D:\ is not accessible Incorrect Function". I have the basic Roxio Easy CD Creator software that also came with the computer, but I don't like this program. It's only an introductory version, so it's clumsy, slow, and doesn't actually seem to work very well. I used to use the CD Writing Wizard a lot for putting photos on disks, which is what I'm trying to do now. The Wizard used to work great for this. Now, though, it seems to be gone entirely. I have tried to reload data from the System Disks, and nothing seems to help. Gateway told me they don't know what I'm talking about, and I can't find any way of sending an email to Microsoft. I tried their Newsgroups thing, but the only answer I got didn't help. Any advice or assistance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly.

Good news; the problem's solved. I sent another email to Gateway, and this time I got a response that worked. The CD Writing Wizard's back, the CD drive is responding, everything seems to be good. Here's a copy of the steps they sent me to follow, in case you're curious. I am providing you with the steps to reinstall the CD-RW drive from Device Manager. I would like you to complete the steps I provided, and then let me know the results of your efforts in a reply to this e-mail message.  I believe the steps given below should fix the issue your computer is experiencing. If you are still having a problem after trying the steps provided below, please send me a reply to this message and I will provide more steps in an effort to quickly resolve the issue. Please follow the steps given below: - Go to Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System. - In the System Properties page that comes up go to the Hardware tab. - In the Hardware tab click on the Device Manager button. - In the Device Manager page click on the (+) sign beside the entry of CDROM/CD-RW drive. - Here select each entry and click the Remove button. - Click Ok. - Now reboot the machine.  Windows XP will detect the CDROM/CD-RW drive. I will also recommend you to remove and reinstall the Roxio software.  Also download the Roxio patch for Windows XP Operating system. Please follow the steps given below: Removal    1.  Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2.  In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3.  In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Easy CD Creator 5 Basic, and then click Add/Remove. 4.  In the Easy CD Creator 5 Basic - InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Next. 5.  Click Remove, and then click Next. 6.  Click Remove. 7.  Files are removed from the hard disk drive. 8.  Click Finish. Installation                Consult the Help files for information on how to use this software and for troubleshooting information.  If installing this software in Windows® 2000 or Windows NT® 4.0, you may need to log on with administrative rights. 1.  Place the Roxio Easy CD Creator CD or Gateway Application CD 2 version 4.5 to 4.6 in the CD/DVD drive.  The installation browser interface starts automatically when Autorun is enabled.  In the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 dialog box, click Yes. Note: If the installation does not start automatically, and you are using the Roxio Easy CD Creator CD, click Start, and then click Run.  In the Run dialog box, in the Open text box, type: D:\Setup.exe (where D is the drive letter of the CD/DVD drive).  Click OK. If you are using Gateway Application CD 2 version 4.5 to 4.6, click Start, and then click Run.  In the Run dialog box, in the Open text box, type: D:\Apps\Roxio\Setup.exe (where D is the drive letter of the CD/DVD drive).  Click OK. 2.  The InstallShield Wizard prepares for the installation. 3.  In the Easy CD Creator 5 Basic - InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Next. 4.  Verify that Complete is selected, and then click Next. 5.  Click Install. 6.  Files copy. 7.  Click Finish. 8.  Click Yes. 9.  The installation program places an Easy CD Creator 5 Basic icon on the desktop.  A Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 folder is added to the Windows/Start Menu/Programs folder. I have run into this problem numberous times and was going through the steps Robin provided to correct it when I discovered that my applications 2 disc is corrupted. Because of this I cannot reinstall Roxio and my drive will not currently copy. The gateway tech said that they cannot replace my disc and that I should do a windows repair as referred by their site. I have my trepidations that this will work and I have had the "please insert cd" problem before and I also know that if one doesn't have Roxio installed on their computer the disk shows empty but full on properties(I know makes no sense). It is my hope that someone will reply with the affirmative that the windows repair worked *fingers crossed*. If not I will be forced to actually purchase crappy Roxio software!!

I just wanted to update that I did a windows repair, and it was the worst possible thing I could have done. Although the tech assured me that no information would be lost, my hard drive crashed and all I could get was a D prompt :(. Because I couldn't back up anything w/o my burner working, I lost a lot of information. I just want to let everyone know NOT to do a windows reinstall!!!!! I had to ship my computer in and, as I said, lost everything I had not recently backed up!...
