Question about 'Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows XP and Windows 2000'

I have a problem relating to my Win XP freezing. For no apparent reason my system locks up...no mouse activity, no keyboard access. Still have a desktop (no BSD). Only solution is to turn off the power at the wall power strip. Then it works fine for a few hours or days, then...locks up. I have 256 ram, 2-20 GB HD, 250 watt power supply, CD Rom and CD RW. Compaq about 3 years old. 750 mhz Duron.

Have a read here. Could be something, could be nothing: -

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819639

Also, dl the following, update then if necessary, and run them on a daily basis.
They relate to spyware, adware, scumware, malware, etcetera: -

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

http://www.safer-networking.org/

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Do an online AV scan, as some virii are designed to disable AV software.

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Last, but by no means least, type "sfc /scannow" into Start - Run, without the quotes,
noting that there is a space between c and / have your XP cd ready, and hit OK.

See how you go and post back with results.

Good luck
