Question about 'How do I make the background of desktop icon text transparent?'

I have wallpaper -- four bears fishing for salmon -- on my desktop and the classical style, as opposed to that horrid xp stuff, for the start menu and taskbar. How do I get a transparent icon text and not revert to that blue and green nonsense?

Right click my computer and select properties.
Go to the Advanced tab and then press Settings button under performance.
Here, scroll the list and select Use Drop Shadows For Icons On Desktop.

Right-click the desktop > Arrange Icons By > then make sure "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is un-checked.

change your Desktop color to your wallpaper background color... right click on your desktop > Properties > choose the Appearance tag > Item: (just under Scheme:) > Scroll the list until you reach Desktop and choose it > choose a new color for your Desktop (actually your new wallpepar color) > Apply... and it's done

I tried what was mentioned, (performance settings) and although it has worked
in the past, this time it didn't work for me.

However, this did! :)

Disable active desktop.

Right click blank area of desktop => click properties =>
Desktop tab => click Customize Desktop => Web Tab

Make sure all items listed in the box are unchecked.

Happy viewing! :)

You are the man!. Sweet solution. The active desktop is crippled by the web stuff. What a crapper, but great solution. Way to got. David

Great. :)

I tried both of the ideas below just the other day and BOTH failed. Frustrating!

However...

I recreated the profile (c:\documents & settings\username)

*Note, these steps below are fairly big changes, don't try it if you're not confident*

Start by restarting the computer, logging on with a different username using a different
profile (ie, administrator) (if you are the administrator, this isn't good practice,
create a new account and give it admin rights - log on and you'll have a fresh account
to play with. If you are missing settings follow steps below to restore them.)
Rename your usual profile folder by adding the word old to it or something. To keep
most settings don't delete this profile!

Log off.

Log on with the usual username and it will generate a fresh profile.

(To restore certain settings you log off and back on with the Admin account. Copy
(NOT CUT) the OLD Application Data folder within the old profile over into the new
one. (ie Adobe, Microsoft settings will be restored etc)) There might be other folders
you can use to restore settings like Favorites, Desktop Items etc. Be careful, you
dont want to copy over too many system folders you might transfer the problems over
too.

Log off and log back on and see how it goes.

If all else fails and it doesn't work, you can log off once again, log on as Admin
and rename the old profile folder back to it's original name and remove the new profile
altogether. Log back on & you are back to working normally.

This reset a lot of things for the profile overall, but fixed the icon's text background
on the desktop which can be quite frustrating.

Goodluck!

Hi Jess, You are an angel! I was so annoyed by the background color which I inadvertently created on a busy day ... this has never happend to me in years of keyboarding. Thanks for saving my sanity and returning my desktop to it former condition. :) Aloha, Pakalana
