My sounds device suddenly stopped working. I have recently upgraded from ME to XP but the above device still worked. Now it won't work - I have constantly unstalled it and tryed to download a new driver but it gets to 94% completed and won't finish. What is the problem and how am I going to resolve it.

Any answer to this would be wonderfull to me also. It's no good using windows update, in fact it was likely an update that caused the loss originally. Thanks..Dre

That's is so strange. Anyone still having this problem on this thread, please email me so we can maybe compare notes on what we've done to correct this. What didn't work for one, may be of substance to another. On hotmail I'm drefoo. Thanks a bunch!

I had the same problem using the same onboard sound device. seems I
had to have SP2 installed before the drivers would install. Also windows update
came
up with new drivers for it, so I updated and the sound was messed up.

Downloaded the driver from my motherboard manufacturer, and all is well again ;)

So my advice would be check your motherboard
manufacturers website, for the latest drivers.

Hey...! I fixed it! All I did was go into---> start..settings...control panel...Sound Audio devices Then click the Hardware Tab..I then went to the (2nd) device driver ( C-Media AC97) and pressed the Property...Driver...Roll Back Driver Problem solved! Sound is back! The driver reverted to a different name (RealTek 97) but who cares...it works! Hope this helps any one with the same problem...

Three times I have updated my computer's audio driver via Windows Update. Each time, the result was that the sound device on the computer stopped working. I might be a slow learner but I've finally learned: if Windows Update offers a hardware driver upgrade, just say no! (The solution given by Keith Matthews is a good one and it works.)

See if you can download a proper driver from the C-Media web site: You can start here: http://www.cmedia.com.tw/driverdownload/e_tech_01.htm

Hi, for those who rolled back the driver successfully and made it work. Can you list the detail of the driver info, such as version number, ie. 05.00.39. etc. Thanks.

Alright, folks, I got it resolved. I found in the above message chain, someone mentioned he rollbacked the driver and it shows something about realtek. So I searched realtek ac97 online. And just download some driver released in May 2006. It works! I am supprised though how much pain I had to go through to get it here. It took me at least 3 hours.

I had the same problem with the " C-Media AC97 Audio Device" driver not working properly after reinstalling windows xp pro. I am not sure why, as I was previously running xp pro and my soundcard worked fine. Anyway, I first tried rolling back drivers as was suggested above, however, there was no previous driver installed because I reformatted my hard drive before the the most recent installation. Next, I opened the casing to my computer and looked on the mother board and found that I had a SIS 916 sound card installed. I was able to find the appropriate driver at www.sis.com (the SIS 7012 audio device driver), which solved my problem. For whatever reason, it seems that XP pro misrecognizes various sound cards as the C-Media AC97, and installs the wrong driver. I suggest that whoever has this problem first looks on their motherboard to see what type of sound card they have (or perhaps their computer's documentation, if they still have it) before they spend countless hours downloading random drivers. Hope this helps.

Hi guys, on the note of xp update causing probs i suffered the same fate as all of you. I had no roll back option as with some of you. I cured my problem by a. i typed the description of my pc and model into a well known search engine and then checked the spec of the build. This identified the soundcard. (it transpires that it is not c-media ac'97 but realtek ac'97) b. I cut and pasted this into the search engine. It led me to the following site. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?series=8&Software=True c. i downloaded the zip file so i could scan for viruses d. moved the unzipped folder to the desktop e. pointed to this folder from within the device manager. HEY Presto. you should then go back to the folder and select setup. This will give you the rest of the features and update your driver list. hope this helps you guys... cheers

Everytime I start, a window appears stating of a New Hardware detected. I deleted all the files I downloaded, but to no avail. I followed also the instructions in the windows hardware troubleshooter, still a blank wall. Help, anyone?

Many thanks for this (and everyone else's advice). I couldn't roll back my drivers; didn't know which option to choose on the C-Media site, but downloaded this one suggested from realtek. Oh the joy of hearing the Windows shutting down jingle when I re-started! I thought I was going to have to buy another laptop!

I had the same problem today. I downloaded the original driver from the computer manufacture. It worked. If you can't try to bring back old driver its an option on the device. The cause was the auto update from Microsoft. I turned it off.

okay this is what you need to do... go into the program files.. sound and audio devices then choose the device so C-Media AC97 Then go to the the general hardware in this item and instead of update driver hit the roll-back feature this will revert it to the previous version which consistantly works Cioa Bello

I was having problems with AC 97 and I went into the "Quarv" settings menu, hit properties and double clicked the Bronztollic Alexenitoid button. After this, go to My Computer and Download the Flunk bloop database. It now works fine.

Quite awhile ago, my audio quit - I now suspect because of a Window's update. Way
back then, I "rolled back" the driver (it rolled back to Realtek AC'97 Audio). I
then had sound, but it echoed badly.

Today, I decided to tackle the problem again. I tried updating my driver using Window's
Update. Instead of Realtek, I now had C-Media AC97 Audio Device and NO sound (the
volume icon had even disappeared from my toolbar). I checked the device manager
& it said it wasn't working and a "Code 10".

I used a search engine to search "C-Media AC97 Audio Device" which led me to this
forum. I read through the suggestions. I did not want to roll back again because
I feared it would bring back the echoing again. Instead I tried this link as suggested
in this forum : http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4400.html .

And VOILA! It worked! The device now reads as Realtek AC'97 again, BUT I now have
sound with NO echoing!!!! I can now listen to my favorite radio shows via computer
- and actually enjoy it!

This worked for me. Piece of cake. Took no more that 10 mins to delete the existing device (through hardware management), d/l the drivers, reboot and voila! I had music!!!

Ensure you have installed the SP2 patch for XP first though. Thanks!

Finally got a fix!! C-Media looked like it was working fine but when enabled, PC went to blue screen error reading problem with cmuda.sys. If audio disabled, then PC would boot up OK. 1. Uninstalled any mention of C-Media: System-Device Manager AND Add/Remove. 2. d/loaded C-Media driver package from MajorGeeks.com (see above) bless 'em... 3. Saved to Desktop and rebooted. 4. On booting up, PC finds new hardware (C-Media AC97 Audio Device) 5. Point the Search to the downloaded folder on Desktop 6. Let the computer install updated files 7. Reboot and cross fingers ... It worked for me, don't know why it went wrong in the first place, unless it was due to a Windows Update (I did not have the C-Media AC97 Update on my PC). This one is a sod! I hope you guys all got sorted eventually.

I guess many people still experience the same problem with C-Media audio device or
no sound problem after system restored or re-installing XP. The problem is the window
XP will select the default sound playback device - in my instance the "modem line
play back audio device". Hence you need to go to "control Panel" open the "sound
and Audio Device" select the Audio tab and re-select sound playback default device
and sound recording default device to C- Media.
This also apply when you install a new C-Media PCI Sound Card, it seems the device
installation falls short of changing the default device setting.
