Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

I have a question about How
do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?:
I have unchecked a program from the msconfig startup tab area, but what I really
want to know is how do I remove the option to check that program all together. i.e.
...how do I remove the program from the start up menu itself in msconfig?

It all depends on where the program is starting from:
Start Menu (Yours or all users)
Run, Run Services etc.
That is what TweakUI does for you, looks in all those places.

I have tried tweakui and the startup folder and cannot figure out what is causing
an explorer window to open up each time the computer is booted. Any idea how to
track this down? Thanks.

Try right clicking on the Start menu and select
Explore all Users. Then click on Programs folder
after the explorer window opens.\
Now you have to make a decision. Where do you wanto put this thing. I just delete
it. After all its just a short cut.

Hey Bob, hows that roof and fryer holding up.

There's an article on Microsoft's web site entitled "How to Modify the List of Programs
that Run When You Start Windows," article id 270035. Here's the address where I
found it on 06/22/2006: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q270035.
Hope this helps!

This thread is 3 years old, you really should start a new one. But ... when you disable
an item via msconfig, it's removed from the Startup folder and placed in a Disabled
Startup Items folder under your login id. On my system the path is like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items
You could simply go there and delete the entry or re-enable it in msconfig then delete
from
C:\Documents and Settings\myuserid\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
myuserid in this case could be your id, All Users or Default user.
