Can't you do the same thing with the minimize and restore button? What's the difference if it goes to the systray instead.

I suppose if you had opened a bunch of things, and know you won't need one of them immediately, it might be useful.... But I'm not sure I that would be enough of a benefit to bother with.

The difference is that it saves you a lot of space. If you are just browsing the internet and doing your word processing with your computer, you might be fine without this tool.
If you got to do serious work that involves lots of different programs to run, it is a real time- or space saver. Consider programs you don't want to restart all the time like all those sessions for VNC, CVS, MKS SI, DB access etc.

Just my 2$ :)
