what does the XP in Windows XP stand for? is it the same as Athelon XP? if not, what
does the XP in Athelon XP stand for? if they are both XP, does this mean AThelon
XP will work better with windows XP and
isn't it some kind of legal infringement to use XP in the name of a Processor?

Yeah, Windows XP means eXPerience, remember it doesn't say good or bad in front of
it, Microsoft is just sure you will get some sort of eXPerience from it, LOL.
Bill is married. She is referred to as Mrs. Bill Gates. She and Bill's foundation
donate about half a billion every year to "charity". Alot of it by donating software
and hardware to educational institutions thus creating more M$ loyalists or at least
people who know more about Microsoft Software and little else about other competiting
software offered by other companies. (I'd like to have more classes about Linux and
Unix but my school only offers one class on Unix (MKS Toolkit over DOS) and they
have no boxes running Unix or Linux. (I'd run a Linux box at home but like most Students
I have no money and can only afford Windows (for my classes) right now!)
AMD says the XP in Athlon XP means "Xtra Performance" see the last question at this
URL----> http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/SellAMDProducts/0,,30_177_4458_3505^3785^8428^3802,00.html
Also note that both products were NOT designed as complementary products just to
fool some people to think so and buy AMD Athlon XP computers, heh....(I like both
AMD and Intel so bugger off! LOL)

As GM said, it stands for eXPerience.
This page at PC Magazine's
website is part of their annual report on service and reliability. They say
that XP is the biggest reason that PC reliability improved from last year's report
to this year's report.
And I'm sure that if MS thought that AMD was ripping off it's name for Windows, they
would be in court in 10 seconds suing them. Maybe they are taking the "imitation
is flattery" point of view and are happy that AMD is calling their chip "CP."

Well, of course they're not calling it CP , they're calling it XP.
Lousy typing strikes again! LOL

I thought I read somewhere that the codenames MS gives its upcoming products are
taken from popular Northwest ski resorts.
This link at the MS website
has Bill Gates' bio.

Do you have internet access - preferably broadband? In 1995 I downloaded Slackware
linux via 9600 baud (!) modem & installed linux on my 486. Too painful to contemplate
nowadays, I agree, but I was unemployed and had no money but losts of time then.
Is there a linux user's group on campus or in town? One of them would likely be happy
to give up their last year's disks when they upgrade to the latest distribution.
If you have a few GB to spare on your hard drive, you can set it up for dual-boot.
My work PC & home PC each run both OSes.
MS probably just doesn't think they'd have a chance annoying AMD over "XP". They
tried to trademark "windows" back in the day, and Intel tried "586", but the courts
wouldn't let them.

Here's a challenge for you. There is a product called VMWare, that will allow you
to run Windows (not sure you can do XP though) from a Linux window. I'm not techie
enough to understand it. One of the Linux guys where I work demo'd it for me. My
son, who is a very recent CS grad, is looking at doing it as well, although he's
got 5 computers as it is, so I'm not sure why he would want to do that.
Also it doesn't take much to run Linux well. You can pickup a "slow" P2 for about
$100.

Thanks Ricer and Kermit, I just emailed the network tech lab assistant...I'm going
to get a cheap box to run Linux...the Lab Assistant let me know that we(students)
can get educationally licensed Red Hat for student use from her office and she may
be able to get Solaris 7.0 from Sun also for student use. I don't want to mess up
my Windows Box as I will have to start using it to multi-boot trial/beta educational
licensed versions of Windows server software that we are supposed to learn about
(Win2k and Win2003).

"Educationally Licensed"........???
That seems kind of silly....considering you can
download the very latest version version of RedHat
(RH9) from any one of a number of sites...
And it's a FULL version...no "license" required....
and it's completely FREE....
But , ,if they have the disks on site , then it beats
the several hours it takes to download it....
(3.09 Gigs for the full meal deal....)
so I guess I can't complain....
I have my RH9 install dual booted with Win98....
I love it....I find myself using it more than Windows XP
lately....
{gasp !}

Well, I was just repeating what she told me. I'm not dumb just uneducated. She says
I need 7 CD-R's for her to burn everything I need. And yeah, I only have dial-up
and downloading would be a pain!
