If you have a firewall it will block the spam also. I have not seen a XP install where the messenger entry is missing in services.

On the list In the order where "messenger" should be located, this is how it follows: logical disc manager,(next should be messenger...but it's just not there),ms software shadow ,net meeting remote. I have windows xp as a fact, and the messenger listing just isn't there.mike j.

All right this is real easy. You go to START and then to RUN on the menu and then you get a box where you can run a command. You type in "services.msc" and then you get a window that lists all the services your computer is programmed to run. You look for the service "messenger". This service has nothing to do with Windows Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger or any other Messenger you might have on your computer. This service broadcasts your ip address on the internet so that you can receive pop-ups (basically, although I am sure its original intent was not so.) You right-click on MESSENGER and then select PROPERTIES. It will most like show that the service being run automatically. Just change that to DISABLE, and then you can click STOP if you want, but you don't have to. Click APPLY and OK, and that will stop your computer from broadcasting your ip, but you will still get popups when your ip is requested; and for that you just need to get a popup blocker. The Google toolbar is a good enough popup blocker for most people. I hope that explains it.

Since you say you cannot find the Messenger application on your list or perhaps cannot get the services window I started thinking...I don't know for sure if you need to or would benefit from doing it, but if you go to START then go to RUN and in the command prompt type in "sfc /scannow" it will check your windows installation to make sure it is complete. Note that you must leave a space between "sfc" and "/scannow", and if your windows installation came from a cd instead of pre-installed you will need the disc to perform the scan. It may just be that somewhere along the lines the local link to your services was altered. You might also want to perform a disc check as well, but I think if you have to do that you will have to do the other scan to actually fix the problem. Performing a disc check, in case you haven't done it before, is done by going to RUN (as with the other procedure) and typing in "chkdsk /f". Again, you must leave a space between "chkdsk" and "/f". If you discover there is a greater problem with your windows installation there is actually a way to reinstall windows without losing any data, although many do not realize it. If you decide you need to do that you can read how to on this link. http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,111652,00.asp
