My question is exactly how to run chkdsk so that it will repair what it finds? Does anything have to be disabled?[firewall , antivirus] Close all programs? Do I have to be connected to the internet if I do have to disable it? What is on the screen when running? I just installed diskeeper 4 days ago and 4 days ago the probs started. I am using windows xp home I do not have a windows cd.Tia Steve

Run, cmd, chkdsk /? Firewall and anti-virus, in theory, do not need to be turned off, but you may find that, depending on the nature of the problem and which anti-virus program you use, that the latter may need to be disabled. Do NOT be connected to the internet. Given that whatever the problem(s) is/are, however, I suggest that the first thing to do would be to uninstall diskkeeper, to see if that remedies the situation.

Chkdsk can't get access to fix errors while XP is running
When you run it in fix mode it will ask to run on reboot say yes reboot and let it do its thing
