Cannot find ShellIconCache on XP

I am running Windows XP and many of the icons related to image files have become corrupted. I have used TweakIU's feature "Rebuild Icons", which did not work, and I cannot find the ShellIconCache even though I the hidden files are shown. Any suggestions?

Don't know if this applies to your situation but the standard icons on my system are located here - Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll

Interesting that the very first link in an Advanced Search in Google for "ShellIconCache
Windows XP" was the information that I believe you are looking for (you ought to
have looked in Google first):

 Fix the Problem

In Xp you'll find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Iconcache.db

I suppose that your having followed the instructions, but not having found that which the instructions said you would find, might make it a wee bit difficult to find that for which you were looking.

ok heres the fix .if your running win xp pro and have stardocks icon packer installed just do a repair to that app.from control panel add/remove programs.i think what happen is iconpacker takes over your icons so the icon file thats suppose to be in C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Application Data is not there.this worked for me as all my icons were not displaying the right pictures

Try this!!! My shortcut checkmarks are back and i could not find shelliconcache either!!! Are you experiencing icon lag, while browsing thru all your Start icons and programs? Do you have a smaller menu delay and your icons need ages to load? No need to give up. Just refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data). It will be automatically recreated. Also this tweak will speed up the icons even more: http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=905

I've just had the same problem as you've been suffering from. Maybe its a bit late, but here is the solution. First of all, I am in the habit of installing lots of (trial) software, ending up with lots of desktop icons, which in the end get corrupted. So first of all, you have to increase the size of XP's icon cache. You do this by navigating with regedit to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer In the right hand pane, double click on MaxCachedIcons and set it to a larger value like 4096. Close regedit. Now you must refresh the desktop, for instance by the icon size trick (32->33->32) mentioned earlier in this thread. And that should give you a desktop with good icons!

XP INFO  XP CLEANUP

Start, Run, and type - regedit - in the window, press Enter. HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE / Software / Microsoft / Windows /currentversion / Explorer In the right side, right-click a blank area and choose "New", then, "String Value" and call it Max Cached Icons (Not - MaxCachedIcons) Double-click this new Key and type the value 8192 into the box. Exit from Regedit.

1. delete %APPDATA%\..\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db
2. ctrl-shift-esc (bring up task manager)
3. kill explorer.exe
4. in task manager, choose file->new task (run...), type 'explorer.exe' and click ok.

Note: you will lose your start bar and all explorer windows will die between steps 3 & 4.
Icons should be restored.
