Question about 'How to Share Files through Windows XP's Internet Connection Firewall'

I have a home peer to peer network (5 PC's all running win XP) and use microsoft
ICS to enable all of them to access my cable modem attached to my "gateway PC".
It has worked well for 2 years. Now the problem. My son left for college and took
his computer which was the "gateway PC". I moved another computer which was on the
peer to peer network to the "gateway" position. That computer can now access the
internet but not share the connection. The wizard in XP for setting up ICS reports
it is unable to setup ICS, When I run "repair" on the network connection to my home
PTP network , I get a; cannot return IP adress error message. When I run ipconfig
as suggested elsewhere on this forum I get the message: an error occured when recovering
interface "tnc" unable to contact your CHCP server request has timed out. When I
rey to change the properties of my network cards, When I hit the advanced tab, I
get the message: windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The WMI
information might be corrupted. How can I reset the WMI? or how can I remove all
networking files so I can set them up a second time? Thanks

Here's how I would being to unravel the mess:
Travel to major electronics retailer and purchase Home Gateway/Router for around
$50 (as low as $29.99 after rebate). Get one with Stateful Packet Inspection rather
than just NAT. (Personally I like Netgear units, but that's just me.)
Uninstall ICS on the XP box on which you were trying to get ICS going.
Again on the problem box, freshen up the TCP/IP stack with the steps in this MS KB
article:
How to Reset
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP.
Set up the router with the cable modem per enclosed instructions. If it takes you
more than 5 minutes, you're doing something wrong.
Plug 'em all into the router and badda-bing, you're done.

Refreshing the IP stack helped in that I can now see the other computers on my home
network and I can share files with them. When I ran the net shell utility it refreshed
the IP stack but also returned the message : "could not obtain host information about
machine[my gateway], some commands may not be available". However I still can't
get the ICS to work. When I run the wizard It states it was unable to set up ICS.
It won't let me manually bridge the networks. When I run repair on the home network
it still tells me cannot return IP address.
The router solution seems attractive but my home network is a peer to peer LAN running
thin coax cable. I have not been able to find a router that will share a cable modem
with a PTP coax network. I don't want to go wireless as long as the old system works.
Thanks

How bout this, travel to a gay bar and get a hot beef injection up your butt. Because
for some of us we have more computers then we want to jam in an office. So instead
of telling us to buy crap that won't help why not go fornicate yourself and stop
wasting our time.
