I have a corrupted explorer.exe file

I have a question about How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes:

I know how to get the taskbar and desktop back after my explorer.exe does not start but everytime I start my comp i have to do it again and again. I was just wondering if there was a way that I can fix this. I read in a different forum (but I love the Annoyance, org forums) that i got a virus that corrupted my explorer.exe file. Is there a way to get a new explorer.exe file? Wouldn't my Anti-Virus program detected it? Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me. XP Proffesional SP1 256 MB Ram P3 1000 Mhz 60 GB Hard Drive Norton Anit-Virus 2003 Professional

You... SHOULD... get a new explorer.exe file by re-applying the service pack.

I had a similar problem. I tried different things but unsuccessfully. Then found information on the microsoft website. It might be Norton CleanSweep creating the problem if you have it installed. After I uninstalled it the problem desappeared (so far), and I hope it will not return. Good luck.

Hello. My first time posting here!

A while ago, I used a resource hacker to edit the decompiled source of explorer.exe
in order to change the start button text (I had SP1 at the time). Everything worked
out just fine. Recently, I upgraded to SP2. I decided to overwrite the new explorer.exe
with the altered one (which was SP 1), not even thinking about it. Now, the task
bar and icons will not launch. When logging in (normally), Explorer terminates, and
I have to launch applications through the task manager. I am unable to get to system
restore (I no longer have a recovery console). How can I get a pristine copy of explorer.exe.
Can someone running XP Professional with SP2 give me their copy?

I also didn't understand what was meant about re-applying the service pack; please
forgive me, as I'm a little n00bish in this area of troubleshooting. I would greatly
appreciate any help!

Thank you,
+CurTis-

Fire up the task manager, run cmd and then c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe from the command prompt (edit the command if you didn't install windows in c:\windows). See if system restore can rescue explorer for you. If that doesn't work, run appwiz.cpl from the command prompt. This will fire up the add/remove programs panel. Uninstall sp2 and your old explorer.exe should work again. If you want sp2, reinstall it. Then make a fresh copy of the sp2 version of explorer.exe and store as backup. Make another copy to feed to resource hacker.

File->New task->

sfc /scannow
See if that fixes it. Assuming you have merely tricked Windows File Protection, not disabled it.

Thanks everyone, I managed to get the problem fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 about a month ago. Thanks for the valuable info on how to run system restore from the command line as well, I never knew where the executable was.

Thanks! Renaming those files helped. Explorer would load, and would be responsive for about 2 seconds, and then it would lock up. You could still task manager and command prompt. but explorer was locked up. Tried windows repair, re-copying explorer.exe and wininet.dll. Nothing worked, till I tried renaming all those files.

Once I login at the welcome screen , all I see is the wallpaper . The taskmanager is the only thing that works. I haven't installed neither sp1 nor sp2 . Could that be a cause ? Does anyone have any other solution to this problem ? Help greatly appreciated . Thanks .

I had this issue and to make a long story short, the cause was from Google Desktop. If you have that installed, remove it and reboot and it will most likely fix your issue.

I had this problem for a long time. When I booted windows, it would show just the
wallpaper and that is it. I would have to open task manager, end the explorer.exe
process and then goto "new task" and type in explorer. However, I think I know how
to solve it since it worked for me. It was related to a virus called "Pinfi" or
"Parite"

This virus infects explorer.exe and then proceeds to infect all other exe files on
your computer and network shares. It makes it so that explorer.exe does not work
when windows starts up also. For details on how to get rid of it go here:
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-011708-2030-99

and click on the "Removal" tab.

You need Norton Antivirus (at least the trial version is what I used).

Follow those instructions and I believe you are set.

Good luck.

Hi Sam, Unfortunately, it seems that my Explorer.exe never runs. It's closed as soon as Windows reboots. You mentioned having to close your explorer.exe through task manager. I am wondering if there are any other solutions. Virus scans came out with negative results in terms of the virus you suggested. Thanks. -Brian

Perhaps if you installed a new Windows into a new operating system and then just replace the original explorer.exe with the newly installed one. If that does not work, you might want to try switching your hard drive into LBA mode through the BIOS. It might not help but, again, good luck.

Thanks for the insight on removing Google Desktop. Combining this info with the advice from 666 about how to get to the add/remove programs function through the command prompt, I fixed the problem on my machine. Here's what I did: Problem started when I used Seagate's utility disk to move my files to a new HDD. On reboot, the taskbar would pop up for a second, then disappear. I could get to Task Manager with ctrl+alt+delete to run programs, but neither the GUI (explorer.exe) or Internet Explorer would run. I ran appwiz.cpl from Task Manager to get to add/remove programs. As soon as I uninstalled the Google Desktop, IE popped up at a Google page asking why I uninstaled the desktop. After screwing around with this for hours, needless to say, I was eager to give Google some "feedback"...

I recently updated XP Home from SP1 to SP2, and installed IE 7.0 and Windows Defender.
Everything seemed to be working normal. I left the computer on to autoupdate last
night. When I got up this morning, I was suffering from the symptoms discribed in
this thread. I am unable to log on. The machine goes through a NT type log on screen
asking for a password, which it never did before. It then goes to the desktop, but
will not load any icons, nor am I able to call up the task manager with ctrl-alt-delete.
I can boot in safe mode, but same results. I can boot in safe mode at the cmd prompt
and I have tried all of the fixes listed here with no success. Here is what happened:

1. Used system restore from the cmd prompt, but it did not help, no change to the
activity
2. Tried to uninstall SP2 from the add/remove panel called up via appwiz.cpl while
in safe mode cmd prompt screen. It fails with the message "windows could not load
the installer for disk drive"
3. I tried to rename the files in the C:\winnt\system32 directory, but when I enter
that in the command prompt it says the path is invalid
4. I do not have the Google desktop, but I do have the Google toolbar installed.
However, when I try to remove it via the add/remove programs panel, it does nothing.
Screen flashes, but no activity occurs.
5. I can call up the windows directory and it shows the KB923191 was installed.
When I tried to run the commands suggested relative to $ntuninstallerkb923191$, I
get various messages that the path is not valid or the file can not be found.

KB923191 was installed last night when I did all of the updates after the install
of SP2, prior to the time I went to bed according to the time in the dir. The machine
was running fine and I left it on to be sure the Defender was getting updates. Autoupdate
was also engaged. When I got up this morning and checked the machine, I found it
in this state.

When I boot up in safe mode with cmd prompt, the prompt reads as follows: C:\Documents
& Settings\Mary Brown.Mary> where Mary Brown is the users name. I am assuming that
I enter all commands after the > in this string. I try to enter them with the C:\
prefix followed by the command, and with just the command alone, but they all fail
except for the two related to the add/remove panel and the restore commands.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I read the posting at andrewsworld about replacing
the two files
 http://www.andrewsworld.org/manual/solutions/windows/c0150002.htm

but I am not sure how to do this, I would need more detailed instructions.

I am trying to help a friend with a similar problem. He went to task manager and explorer.exe seemed to be taking all the memory so he did the "delete tree" thingy... well now he cannot get anything on his desktop except wallpaper. The CTRL+ESC doesn't work nor the right click... He can get in to task manager....but nothing will open outside of task manager... If we could just get to system restore...and run it I think that would work but maybe not. Any suggestions? thanks

If you can open the task manager, right click on the explorer that is running and click "end task". Once it disappears off the processes, go to File and click on "run/new task". Type in explorer, and your desktop should return and also your task bar. Should get you to your System restore. Hope this helps

You have had that problem for four years? That would have driven me insane by now!
It is not a software problem as such - you have proved that with fresh OS installs,
even a different hard drive - so start looking for a hardware problem. Is the CPU
overclocked and are you sure the memory timing is correctly set up in the BIOS? I
know on my own machine that I can only overclock it by an absolute maximum of 12%
and if I take it further than that, it screws up intermittently. Overclocking the
CPU usually overclocks the memory as well. As the machine is getting old now, lift
the lid and make sure it isn't all clogged-up with dust, which can/will cause overheating.
Hope this helps. Cheers. Spexx.

You are not paranoid. They really do have it in for you.

@Spexx...It can't be a problem of hardware, beacause i have recently update my processor and motherboard..before i had 500 Mhz and 256MB RAM, now i have 1GHZ and 512 and motherboard of Intel...the same problem is now happening with my Laptop after connecting my laptop with my desktop through ethernet..

Found that windows booted slower and slower, until it reached step 8. I am using xp X64, and found all is good for a while, till the boot sequence takes a tumble. for 2-3 days I would turn my system on and it would get as far as the login screen, then halt. I assumed that I had a virus, and went to worek, letting norton AVG take a long, slow look at my drive, to detect any problems. Little did I realise that the problem may be deeper than I thought. I followed the instructions of 666, who suggested rolling back windows. luckily for me, all I do with my rig is a little surfing, and a hell of a lot of gaming. a little roll back for me is no problem.

I had a similar problem - my desktop kept crashing every 5-10 seconds each time I started Windows, even in Safe Mode. The explorer.exe was always crashing and restarting itself and the only way I could run programs was through pressing CTRL + ALT + DELETE. A full scan with Avira antivirus did not fix the problem but I then used Malwarebyte Anti-Malware and it found and successfully deleted the Vundo trojan. I had disabled system restore before doing the cleanup with Anti-Malware because if you dont, I understand the trojan can re-install itself by hiding in the last good known config file. This was a nasty piece of junk that somehow got into my computer but Malwarebyte Anti-Malware has worked like a dream. I also used VundoFix (can be found on Google) for a scan afterwards but it did not detect anything further - presumably the issue has been fully fixed by Anti-Malware. All the best with your problem. I read a lot about it on different forums and I think it can be caused by different issues but in an case its certainly a good idea to run some good anti virus + some good anti malware scans.

Hey guys.
I have a similar problem.
I'm running out of disk space, and I used the NTFS compression on several folders
within the Windows dir, so I guess this is why it happened.
Ever since I did that, explorer no longer starts on its own (btw, it started crashing
a lot in the last week or so). I just get to the wallpaper and the computer hangs.
If I run it as a new task from task manager, no problem, it starts up and everything
works just fine, and incredibly it doesn't crash anymore!!!

I just decompressed the folders I compressed, and I think it will work just fine.
But it would be interesting if any of you could tell me which folder in the Windows
dir (and in the Documents and Settings dir) I should NOT compress and which folders
are SAFE to compress.
Reinstalling Windows at this time is not an option for me. No time and no diskspace
at the moment for repartitioning, and no funds for a new, bigger hard drive...:-)
Using XP Pro with SP3
Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue. Explorer.exe will become corrupt, or unlinked because of viruses/malware/spyware etc... There are two options to resolving this issue: 1. Everytime you boot up your computer you do ctrl+alt+del then file new and run explorer. This can get annoying. 2. This actually resolved the issue I was having. a. Download the latest service pack from Microsoft (don't do automatic updates! Google it!) There are only three service packs, SP1, SP2 and SP3. b. Save that latest service pack to your computer. c. Remove/Uninstall the latest service pack that is installed on your machine. d. Reboot and install the service pack you just downloaded. e. Problem should be resolved.

I just have to respond to this problem. I tried so many things and was ready to uninstall service pack3 and reinstall like I read, then I decided to try removing the google toolbar from the Control Panel, couldn't believe my eyes when I rebooted and there was my Start button and toolbar! Mine disapeared because of the 2010 virus, I got it removed but it left me with the corrupted explorer.exe file. Thank you, thank you, Emario and others who wrote in originally.

So what if explorer.exe fails to execute, you cannot access the task manager (I know how to press ctrl-alt-delete), booting up into the last successful configuration does not work, and attempts to get into safe mode, with or without a command prompt, result in the computer restarting? Sledgehammer?

Not a sledgehammer but a CD. Use your XP CD to do a repair/install. If you have valuable data that isn't backed up, post back first. PS What exactly happens when you try to get into Safe Mode for instance ?

After reading through the above posts and unfortunately not having any luck I managed to find my own fix as follows: CTRL, ALT, Del and run a new task called iexplore Then go to http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm Download from one of the mirror sites but RUN the application don't save it otherwise you will not be able to get to the file as your desktop is not working correctly. Run a Registry scan and clean and then re-boot. (I also uninstalled the google toolbar and google updater but not sure if this had any effect) After a reboot all works fine. Hope this helps someone out. Regards http://www.akirastudio.co.uk
