Question about 'Stop Pop-Up Spam Messages'

I Does turning off the messages service harm my computer in any way? Is it easy to enable the message service again? I have the Windows firewall turned on but it does not stop the pop up ads. Is there another firewall that will protect my computer better than the Windows firewall and stop the pop ups?

You might get a router that has a built-in firewall, will cost you $40-$50.

The messenger service is for internal communication inside a network of many computers, like the type a large company might have. It has no practical use for a home user. It has nothing to do with Windows messenger service. Some people get confused between the two.

MS tweaked the default settings for the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) built
into XP in Service Pack 1/1a, and that tweaking is capable of stopping classic Messenger
Service spam popups.

If you do not have XP SP1/1a, this is a good reason to apply it.

If you do have SP1/1a, did not mess with the ICF settings, and are still getting
popup spam, it's most likely that these are not Messenger Service popups.

One of the many available popup stoppers should either reduce or almost eliminate
the popups. I just notice that Google's new toolbar has a built-in popup stopper.

I have been using Googles popup blocker for awhile, and it works great. I have always had my XP box's configured where they don't recieve messenger spam, so I can't vouch for how it works on it, but regular web popups are gone without notice.
