the source exist and that you can access it." What does it mean?

I also had the same problem for long time. But I finally found the culprit. It's
me. Actually the problem is not with Office but a quirk in the way it handles one
bakckup file. I like to clean up my hard drive by using various methods and one or
more of these will search for BAK files and delete them regardless. One of these
BAK files is excpected to be there by Office and if it is not.....gues what happens!
This file is called DATA.BAK. Do not delete it!!!

Where is the Data.bak file supposed to be located? I've been having the same problem
and just can't fix it!

I found the file at "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data".
What I did was close all of my Office applications, and then I renamed the "data.bak"
file to "data.bak.bak". Next, I started Outlook. Outlook told me it was installing
something and I needed to insert the Office CD to continue. Then, I canceled the
installation and close Outlook. Final, I renamed "data.bak.bak" back to what it
was. This is how I solved the problem. I hope that this will work for you.

As in some of the previous messages the data.bak file was gone for me too and cause
the windows installer problem each time i used office 2003...
I fixed this by creating a text file and renaming it data.bak in C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\OFFICE\DATA

a little workaround
Click on Start->run, then type gpedit.msc then click on 'Ok'.
Then go to 'Computer Configuration'->'Administrative
Templates'->'Windows Component'->'Windows Installer'.
Then click on the right pane on the setting that says 'Disable Windows Installer'.
Click on 'Enabled' then select 'Always' from the dropdown box.
Click ok and close the group policy application.
Now try to reproduce your problem again, you should see the popup
appear and then disappear making your life a lot easier.
Should you need to install anything that requires the Windows
installer, then just follow almost the same process, and set 'Disable
Windows Installer' to 'Disabled'.

I had this problem today as a result of a language settings issue. I had encountered
a website today that required Japanese language installments. Little did I know,
after I did this, the stupid xp installation window popped up every time I opened
any office application and strange Japanese header marks appeared on my 255 page
novel in Word!! It would not allow me to change xp language settings without installing
the xp cd. I tried the installer cd and nothing worked!! The installer window kept
popping up.So...what did I do? After hours of frustration, I restored my system to
yesterday! Problem solved!! No more windows or strange Japanese symbols. I'm such
a cheater! lol

solutions. Can someone help me? Please type slowly,...I`m kinda computer stupid.
Thanks, Plain

Probally an issue with old installer files. Try this, it is a tool from Microsoft
to remove old installer files. Worked for me.

Thanks a lot Pavel.
Your tip gave me an excellent help.I am also in habit of running softwares like windows
washer which are considered very good ones for removing junk files from windows.
But for last some days, when i tried opening any MS Office application like word,
Power point, excel etx, it gave a message of G(Which is my setup locatio drive):\....
\ .....\ Data.bak not found. I just went to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Data.dat , copied this dat file to the location where the installtion
prompted me, changes its name to Data.bak and restarted the applications. It really
worked.
Many softwares like webroot windows washer consider all .bak files as junk and delete
them.
So be very cautious and note that this happens mostly when you enable the "Show hidden
files & folders" option from control panel. After the hidden microsoft files ( eg
are ntldr , ,bak etc )which are normally hidden and dont allow detection by third
party softwares, now become visible and can be accidently deleted. So please disable
the hidden files option always and enable only when you very critically need it.
Thanks
