blank error message!

Yeah, i'm having a slight problem--er--annoyance. Each time XP starts, a small,
BLANK error message window pops up which halts the startup until I make a choice.
The window has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside of it and Yes
and No buttons, but nothing else! When i click Yes, XP seems to startup extra slowly.
Clicking No seems to work fine. This is not a major problem, but it is extremely
ANNOYING!!! I don't have to restart my machine often, but I wish I didn't have that
stupid useless box pop up when I do have to restart. I've already updated and scanned
for viruses. I have no idea why this just started happening. Any help with this
would be greatly appreciated! Thanx!

Have you also scanned for trojans, etc., using Spybot and/or Ad-Aware?

You might want to check the "Event Logs" under the Event Viewer under System Tools
in the Computer Management screen. That is available through Control Panel / Administrative
Tools.
The events logged at startup might give you a clue as to why the error message is
popping up. And looking at the sequence of events for several startups might tell
you what is happening when you click yes, as contrasted to when you click NO.

I wish I were more experienced with this. I have not had the problem, the information
at the other site is from another user.
You have viewed the events logged at startup, for both system and security. If I
infer correctly, you are saying that you see no warnings or information items that
indicate there is anything other than normal activity being logged at the system
and security and application levels at startup.
Despite this you are getting a blank warning message with a yes/no response at startup.
You do not perceive, and the system does not record in the event viewer, any difference
in system behavior or state which results from clicking Yes vs. No.
If all these inferences are correct, then the error message must be the result of
some factor other than core Windows XP operations, which would relieveve any concerns
I had about the message a lot. But to get rid of the message you need either a
solid recommendation from an expert who knows more about "system startup error messages"
than I - or to go to the internet and google for a description of the registry edit
which disables startup warnings altogether.
If I am wrong about the inferences I have made above, and you have items in your
event viewer at startup which are suspect or which you do not understand, use the
copy feature to post them here, so we can have a look.
Best to you.

thanx Jim P.
your inferences were correct. I've googled for those registry edits and i tried adding
a 'NoPopUpsOnBoot' in the registry as instructed by the website but the warning messages
keep coming.
the blank error messages has not done any obvious harm to computer yet but i do want
to rectify it.
regards

I get almost the same thing.. Except mine isn't a warning message, mine is an error
message, and no matter which I click, yes or no, it takes me back to the welcome
screen asking me to login again. I cannot get into windows unless I go through safe
mode... If anyone has found a solution please post it. Thanks.

Understanding the Problem

I was having the same problem as all of you people were having, but I found out what
it is. I am using a cracked version of Windows XP and I had thought my crack worked,
but Iwa wrong. THe error message that is coming up is saying that you have so long
to activate windows. After the time has ran out and you try to login by click the
yes or no you're just sent right back to the welcome screen. I have no clue where
I can find a working crack or anything, so I dunno how to help everyone that has
this problem. I am just going to have to return to my legal Windows 2000.
