Darn icons on the desk top don't alphabetize properly

I have a question about Why
don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?:
Worse, they remember the "wrong" ones. For reasons I have not been able to figure
out, one too many programs has decided that it should not sort alphabetically, as
my settings dictate, but should jump to the front of the line.
I want to do two things.
First, track down the idiots who did this and kill them, painfully.
Second, kill the problem.
I'm posting here because this is a sub-set of explorer and caused by some sort of
explorer mess.
Thanks.

I did that -- it is how I initiated the alphabetize.
The easiest solution is just to copy the link and create a new short-cut. Ones I
create alphabetize correctly.

I think I've figured it out. When the icons are alphabetized, the full path name
is used. However we only see "name" of the icon which is the end of the path.
The clue came from the statement that icons created by the user were in order. Here
are paths of one that has not yet been fixed. There was also a clue I was slow to
pick up on - the shortcuts I created did not contain (2) at the end indicating there
were duplicated. This suggested they were in different locations. Here is the proof
--
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0
C:\Documents and Settings\FStone\Desktop\Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0
The first icon and those in "All Users" appeared first because "All Users" sorts
ahead of "FStone".
Just my two cents worth.

Thanks Stone,
I was enlightened by your discovery.
An alternative to creating another shortcut link is to CUT all the icons in C:\Documents
and Settings\FSTONE\Desktop\ and PASTE them over to C:\Documents and Settings\ALL
USERS\Desktop\
and your desktop icons will be in their rightful alphabetical order.

I have tried everything to alpabetize my desktop icons. Nothing worked. So, I simply
right clicked each icon, dragged it to the side and dragged each icon back to be
in alphabetical order. So far, they have stayed that way. I hope it works for you.

I had the same problem in XP.
I took a guess. I made TempDesktop folder and copied all the shortcuts from the
desktop folder to it. Deleted all the desktop shortcuts.
And recopied every shortcut back to the desktop.
Low and behold everything is in proper alphabetical order !
Don't know why this works thru ?
