Try looking in Task Manager to see what is the name of this program. Run a search of your drive(s) to see where it resides. Perhaps you will then be positioned to determine if it is one that can safely be removed.

I have the same problem on a Dell m600 laptop, and it's driving me crazy. The taskbar is slow to respond on startup, and an "End Program - Sample" box pops up when I close down, with a loading bar (I don't know if these are connected). I scanned for viruses using an up-to-date symantec utility and TrendMicro. Ran Adaware and Spybot. Searched for any files with "Sample" (there was a Sample.mov from quicktime and some Sample.WSB files -- I don't know what they did, but all were accessed currently). I removed them to the recycle bin, and uninstalled quicktime. Ran msconfig and services.msc to get rid of just about all the start up programs...but I still haven't fixed the problem.

Same here, new Dell D500. Will restore system and try again. Could have been caused by putting in Norton a/v or shutting off restore point...probably a Dell script error using sysprep though...

Hi, I experienced similar problems today with my centrino laptop. I found what caused
it and how to fix it, perhaps it helps with your problem.

Before the problems occured I did a fresh install of windows 2000 pro with SP2, then
upgraded to SP4 via WU. Then I installed all the drivers from the cd, and one piece
of software: sygate personal firewall. I usually tweak the OS after an install, remove
the services I know I don't need, and try stopping the ones I think I don't need.
Anyways, after shutting down and removing a service called 'Spectrum24 Event Monitor',
the following problems started occuring:

1. After startup, I try opening up the control panel which leads to the taskbar freezing
up. I have to kill explorer.exe and restart it, and everything is OK again. The control
panel is the only thing causing the freeze-up so far though. And if I try opening
the control panel after restarting explorer.exe it works fine.

2. When shutting down, I get two instances of a "End program - sample" window. After
pressing End Now on both, windows shuts down normally.

After getting these like 3 out of 3 times, I tried starting the mentioned service
again. And voila, everything runs smooth again. So I just leave it at Automatic.
Looks like it has something to do with the WLAN card (Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100
3B). I tried disabling the WLAN card, but the problems were still there if the service
was stopped.

Anways, maybe you have the same process or a similar one causing the problem? I don't
know if XP automatically finds the WLAN drivers but I had to install it manually
in 2000. If you have the same WLAN card but had XP automatically find the drivers,
maybe it would work if you re-installed them from the driver CD, and had the mentioned
service to run automatically?

Just a few ideas...

RC

I just discovered the solution to this problem. The problem is caused by a component of the Intel ProSet software which is installed on many computers with wireless cards - especially Centrino based machines. The component that is causing the problem is called ZCfgSvc.exe and can be seen in your task list. You have two options. One, end the task on ZCfgSvc.exe and then rename the file (located in C:\Winnt\Systems32 on Win2K) to ZCfgSvc.old. I just don't like deleteing files outright - I prefer to rename them in case I need them later. Restart the machine and that should fix the problem. I don't think that this component actually has bearing on the function of your wireless card or the processor performance, but if you notice that it does, you may want to try the second option. The second oiption is to uninstall and reinstall the Intel ProSet software. If you have a Dell, this is pretty easy. First, uninstall it from Control Panel and then put in your Dell Resource CD and Choose to extract the Intel Proset software under your Wireless or Network card heading. If resinatlling it that way doesn't fix it. remember where on your hard drive you extracted it to, uninstall from Control Panel again, and then run the Setup.exe from the extracted location on your hard drive. This worked for me. Good Luck!

Just like RC here, I like to tweak the OS, especially on a factory image. I experienced the same problem and just wanted to comfirm that setting the Spectrum24 service to automatic does fix it.

This suggestion likewise fixed the error for me on my Dell Latitude D400. In addition, I was having another problem which was cured by this fix. I was trying to install Microsoft ActiveSync so I could synchronize my PDA. It would copy all the files, then fail without any errors. Once I re-enabled the Spectrum24 service, I could install with no problem. I was suspicious of this being the fix, because once I would click on End Program twice, some ActiveSync errors would appear very briefly before the session ended. Thanks for the recommendations everyone. Matt

To confirm both previous responses. Starting the Spectrum24 service removed the 'End Program - Sample' error, AS WELL as stopping any 'installation' issues. Prior to this solution, I had difficulty installing any applications.

I have an IBM T40 with XP and come up with the same "End Program - Sample" error when shutting down that everybody else is getting. The problem is there is no ZCfgSvc.exe everyone is talking about or Spectrum24 Event Monitor. I do have an Intel Pro/Wireless adapter, by the way. Any suggestions or fixes? Thanks.

I setted this Service to Automatic and the Error-Message was gone. But I have the Problem that XP does´nt shot down at all and I don´t know why.

I have an IBM r40 laptop. I'm discovering the same end program - sample on my machine, but i disagree with the posts above that we should let this continue. This really feels like a piece of spyware or something. I'm going to look on microsofts website (not that its ever any help) and really search around other tasklist manager sites, and i suggest everyone does the same, because this sounds like a proprietary software, with a strange name, and we shouldn't have to deal with shutting down a program every time we use windows

I think my preinstalled drivers autodetect the wrong driver for the wifi minipci adapter build in. regards

"Workstation" service, when enabled causes a shutdown process hang because "CardReaderLookup Window" will not end task or quit running, shutdown etc. allowing WinXP to finish an orderly shutdown process. Via mscinfig utility, disable the "Workstation" service and the "CardReaderLookupWindow" problem goes away. Re-enable the "Workstation" serice and the "CardReaderLookupWindow" problen returns to interfere with a normal OS shutdown process. Anybody...any truely effective and intelligently thought though suggestions for an effective resolution to this would be appreciated.

I get the same CardreaderLookupWindow dialogue box appears when I come to close down. I allow it to run then use the shutdown button, this closes system properly. Have tried everything to rid it to no avail, it is just plain annoying especially when in a hurry, it extends the SD time. I would be most grateful if one of you experts out there could give me a solution to the problem. Many thanks.

I had recently installed Adobe Photoshop version 3 a free trial level program. It has a card reader application that will allow a connection through various means to download digital photos etc. I simply removed it and the problem was removed. My thoughts are that you have a program attempting to read a card reader and it is not installed or updated correctly. Regards,

Hi! I Googled many times about this problem and was pulling all remaining hair out! I had the same problem and had to re-boot everytime I switched a USB disc, tried to download pictures from a camera etc. Otherwise the PC (3-year old Dell Latitude) would not "see" the usb discs. Then, as described by the other posters, at close down the laptop hung until I ended the cardreaderlookupwindow. Maybe there is more than one solution to this problem, but if the following is your situation, try it. I just removed Photoshop Album version 3 (free magazine disc version) and it fixed my cardreaderlookupwindow problem immediately ... and I can now use USB discs and swap them around again. BTW, I also ran Regseeker to clean out any Registry references at the same time, so maybe you have to do this also. Enjoy. John
