Abbreviating with ~ in the address bar

I am trying to use the subst command on my computer, but it doesn't allow spaces to be used. I am able to access some folders using the ~ key, but others I cannot. The ones I can are represented like: C:\Docume~1\...; or C:\PROGRA~1; or Docume~1\Owner\Local~s. Other than, these, and a couple other within the documents and settings folder, I don't know what would be used. If someone could tell me how to determine what to type before the ~ and after it, whether its a number or a letter, I would have much appretiation for them. Thanks in Advance. Arthur A.

To change long file names to the old dos 8.3 format... Type the first six letters followed by ~1. If more than 1 long file name exists that starts with the same 6 characters, you will have to count 'em up. e.g, ~2, ~3, etc...

All you need to do is enclose the path in quotation marks
IE if you want to set it to I:\Adam Bradley\My Documents
You can use ether I:\AdamBr~1\MyDocu~1 or " I:\Adam Bradley\My Documents"
I don’t know of a site that really explains the 8.3 conversion rule well or I would post it here
