Click on START, Right-Click on "My Computer" and choose "Manage". In the window that appears click on "Services and Applications" then double click "Services" and you will find Messenger in the list. Double click on "Mesenger" and in the box to the right of "Start Up Type" choose "Disabled" or "Manual" depending on your preference.

Click Start - Run -type services.msc then click OK.

But you should also be running a firewall, see Dan Sarandrea's reply to an earlier thread dealing with this problem.
