sound device error

i have xp with soundmax integrated digital, but when i try to play any music files
or films, windows media player give me this error

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound
device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in
use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

device manager is showing that this device is ok

whats is going wrong?

thanks

I noticed quite a few threads with this problem after a search on Google Groups. Nothing helped, but I think I found the solution The symptom is that you see the message "driver is enabled but has not been started" on the sound card settings, and everything sound card related is working fine, except that message, and that you can't see any audio devices in audio settings. Here's the solution that worked for me. First check your System group in Device Manager and see if you see an entry called "Plug and Play Software Enumerator." If you don't see it, then I have the solution for you. I remembered accidentally deleting Plug and Play Software Enumerator from the System group in device manager. I reinstalled it, and everything worked fine. Here's how to reinstall it: You'll need to find two files (try doing a Google Search) #1. swenum.inf #2. swenum.sys Then Add New Hardware, System Device, and have disk. Choose swenum. Install it. Reboot. Voila. It should be fixed.

copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir
remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=*

add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir with the modified machine.inf) and
install the plug and play software enumerator

swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers
streamci.dll is found in system32
or they can be found on your windows disk

Hey guys i'm still having no luck despite what is above. I even have the Software Plug and Play Software Enumerator. I have the A7V8X-8. I did actually installed the front usb things upside down so i'm wondering if that shorted out the audio. My front usb works though but my rear audio still doesn't, so i don't know if that has to do with anything. Anyway - i have installed the latest bios update, i have installed the latest SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio device drivers and nothing. I am pretty PO'd because now i have to get another card unless someone can come up with another solution for me asap. I have windows XP btw.

Again, these are instructions on how to install the Plug and Play Software Enumerator in XP/2k -- if it is missing. If it isn't missing and works then this wouldn't be the cause of your audio problem. If you had problems with the previous instructions, here they are again. I presume swenum.inf is a Win9X/ME only file. The machine.inf solution should work for 2000 and XP. If you can't find or see the files it may be because your explorer isn't configured to show system or hidden files -- check your options or use a cmd prompt. From an MSDOS cmd prompt type or cut and paste md \temp cd \temp copy %windir%\inf\machine.inf \temp\allmachine.inf copy %windir%\system32\drivers\swenum.sys \temp copy %windir%\system32\streamci.dll \temp notepad \temp\allmachine.inf Using notepad go to line 22 (CTRL-G 22) which should be ExcludeFromSelect=* delete and remove that line wherever you find it (Line 20 maybe) and save the file We're finished that part. Notepad and the cmd prompt can be closed. %windir% was probably c:\windows\ and that was automatically be expanded in the windows cmd prompt. Now, just go to Add Hardware, add a new hardware device there at the bottom, install from list, next, have disk, and select the temp directory where we copied the files (c:\temp\ in the example here). You should have all the different machine level services listed since we've removed the ExcludeFromSelect=* which hid them all. We only want to add Plug and Play Software Enumerator and nothing else so select and install only that.

Hi All, Just came across this forum for a similar problem and will be trying this out tonite, at home. However, just like to see if my bug is similar to yous. My sound icon is there, but when clicked, it says "blah blah is not installed" Hardware check is seems to be fine. However, when i restart my machine, i get my sound back. all is well. for example, if i use media player right after a reboot, i will be able to enjoy Linken Park. Once i close the player, soon after, i will lose my sound too. Does this fix apply to my scenario? Thanks much, blu

Hello Van, could you help with this question ? After copying the files to the temp directory, next step being add Hardware. This is where I got lost. After choosing the option "select from list", I am suppose to indicate what type of hardware I am adding before clicking " Next". So which hardware to choose ?

I did this and I get a yellow exclaimation mark next to the software device enumerator in system->hardware. I know that's the problem because I dual boot and sound works fine in 98.

It works right away, not even a reboot. I wonder what screwed it up in the first place. Thanks.

I'm trying to get this to work on XP but when the add hardware wizard finishes it
says :

An error occured during the installation of the device.

The data is invalid.

Any suggestions? I haven't had sound for 3 weeks (Stopped working after a power
failure and subsequent reinstall of XP.)

also , my card actually plays audio through the music program Ableton live, but no
where else! (I keep getting an error that states the wdm driver is damaged or missing)

I encountered the same result.
Also, the service "Windows Audio" must remain disabled and stopped for my computer
to even function.. perhaps that clues anyone into a possible solution?

I sustained some nasty damage from some software drivers I was downloading. I was looking for WDM drivers for my SBLive! card (as I was having that famous 0x80004005 directplay/voice issue), and installed the package (it wasn't from Creative.com). The system (XPSp1)crashed at the end of the install, and lo and behold on restart I'd lost my plug and play enumerator, my CD rom drives, my Logitech QuickCam, and my Sound card. The system restart also showed (thanks to Otrack SystemSuite) that most of the drivers for these devices had been corrupted. I also wound up with about 10 different adware and spyware apps on my PC, a couple of virii, and some backdoor worms. Wonderful. And on top of that, I've dug through my piles of dusty CD's and can't find my '98 CD. If someone could send me swenum.inf, I'd really appreciate it. My swenum.sys seems to be intact, but if you want to send that as well, I won't complain. If I can remember where I downloaded that driver pack, I'll let everyone know so you don't suffer my fate.

Thank you Tony,

I had inadvertently uninstalled the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator when
troubleshooting sound issues with a new computer, and had assumed that whatever device
it was would be redetected and reinstalled automatically. Of course then the sound
issues became worse. A Google search on the status message in Device Manager took
me to a discussion on the Dev Shed forums, which referenced your post. That did
the trick! Thanks again.

i'm a genius. okay no. i'm an idiot. i threw away my old card thinking it was my hardware. it was only 30bucks, but still. that sucks. but here's my solution in case it helps anyone. in my case, for some reason the swenum.sys was missing. i could not find it in my WinXP cd or my win2k cd. I did find it in my 98SE CD. it was inside win98/BASE5.cab (i opened it with winrar). i did the procedures mentioned here, creating the temp directory and installing with Have Disk, and it worked. if you can't find those files i found some sites that were selling them (http://www.windll.com/sys-0800-0899.php), for about 10 euros. good luck, and thanks everyone for your help. from La La Land, California -berde

For me, there was already a PnP swenum installed, so installing another one didn't actually help (I spent quite a lot of time trying to uninstall the extra one - needed to edit registry - since the extra device just caused crashes etc.) I somehow found out, that from device manager some devices were hidden, one of which was somehow conflicting and thus not started - think it was some kernel system audio device in sound, video and game controllers. Solution: uninstall all devices, both kernel and other, reboot, and I guess everyhting was reinstalled after the reboot. At least I'm just listening to music from my hard drive... :) (Note: I did a bunch of unsuccessful attempts with various strategies before I managed to get the sound devices to function properly, so I cannot guarantee that this works just like this, but it may give pointers to where to look for the solution for the problems.) good luck everyone. -J.

Ladies and Gentlemen!

this single thread compiles what i reckon the TOP 5 phenomenons of forum-based trouble
solution:
after 12 hours of nonstop recherche, i find a solution of superior expertise. although
the thread gets lost in exhausting praises, this doesn't help making the solution
more popular - an impressive demonstration of the price of independent information:
not censored means not rated means, not paid means not moderated.
so how do we get all this valuable information organized? hopefully the possibilty
to edit threads, cut citing redundancy or at least to rate the importance of posts
or parts of posts will develop soon, as it is found in wikipedia already.

Anycase, @mike: you're a genious, and although i'm quite a geek i had not guessed
this solution in 10.000 attempts., really!

Thank goodness for this thread. I was ready to fork out bucks for a PCI sound card that probably wouldn't have fixed the problem anyway!! I think my swenum.inf and swenum.sys problems were possibly caused by a power outage/power surge. Although I also had just recently installed a new PCI tv tuner card as well that could have contributed. Thought I'd mention that just in case others are trying to diagnose. Follow the 'install new hardware' instructions on this thread and you'll be hearing sound in no time. thanks again to all who posted this issue and solution!!

I'm having the same problem but the fix listed here does not work. I still have a yellow flag on the enumerator. I've tried multiple times...no luck. Everything was fine till I tried to install a joystick, then the enumerator popped up. I tried to uninstall/reinstall it and that knocked out my sound. No my creative live 5.1 WDM is flagged and a reinstall on that hasn't helped either.

It's been a year minus a week since I posted my two bits.

Let me just repeat to everyone that is is not a method to install the sound card drivers and you should not try to update ANY drivers with this proceedure. This is simply to install the Plug and Play Software Enumerator if it is missing (again, no updating). Once that is done then installing the Sound card and getting it to work should be automatic, if the PnPSoftEnum was your problem.

I'm also unsure about that other solution in this thread page where you get the swenum.inf and .sys file from a win98 machine for use in winXP?! I've always assumed this is the WinXP discussion form so I was talking to a WinXP audience. If that method does work then it may only be because of windows file protection. Meanwhile, with XP SP2, I don't think it's possible to uninstall the PnP Software Enumerator anymore (not manually anyways), blah.

I'll just direct you to this website which has a set of simple steps along with some pictures...

I have used various fixes over the years but never stopped to thank the ones that gave me the 'fix' If it wasn't for this forum I would have spent a long time re-installing or repairing xp and then re-installing all the software that needed fixed after that. I found this on a Google search and found the right words to lead me here. I looked at 200/300 previous search results with no fix that worked. I was reluctant to go through all the 'hoops' with the msdos prompt so I tried it while still in windows by right-click dragging all 3 files into a new folder with the copy function. Then I renamed the machine.inf to allmachine.inf. Then I double-clicked it to remove the line as specified. Then saved it. The next part got confusing as I had to select the 'classic' mode to see the add hardware icon in the control panel\system selection. Then I guessed and selected a generic system device in the show all items selection (it may not matter) I refered to the new file I just saved. Then I scrolled the list to find that enumerator selection and added it. No reboot. No delay. Now my sound is back and by the way, I had a SoundBlaster Live card which I put in to try and get the sound back previously. It didn't work either until I did this enumerator add thing. Now they BOTH are active giving me a selection on all my audio stuff to select one or the other and they both work. (I may leave it in for awhile for fun) Many, many thanks to the persons responsible for this fix. I (oops) spent 20-30 hours trying everything I could and was within minutes of an XP repair. Thank you.

re: sound device error -- But my enumerator is present???

So Tony, what if the PnP enumerator is showing present and OK under system devices and there is no sound or audio. I have not seen any potential corrections in this thread that deals with that other than possibly DocJP on 12/15/03 above. But his suggestion 'assumes' one has the SIS 7012 or 7018 driver loaded. If you don't?

Having the same problem, winxp sp1 or 2, I have two audio devices now, one internal and the other external usb, still NO AUDIO and xp can’t find the audio device. The actual devices are okay, but the associated audio drivers indicate: "driver is enabled but has not been started" I tried the fix and now have the plug and play enumerator in my device manager (listed twice!). Also removed the registry entries for midi..etc, per other fix listed above. Any other ideas besides reinstall? Warm regards, David

Well, then you have to find whatever audio drivers you should be using. Go to your Audio device with a /!\ and update them from a directory with the approriate drivers (find those and download/extract them). You should hopefully have normal driver problems not weird problems with some other device you would never suspect (the PnP Software Enumerator... WTF is that?). You hopefully have normal problems.

"Error code 10, driver is enable but has not started" usually refers to driver issues. Find and download the proper drivers then update them manually pointing them to the directory where the drivers are waiting. Again this should hopefully be a problem with sound drivers and not some wierd "unrelated" thing that you would never suspect. You might want to go into the bios and turn on PNP there, disable any com or LPT ports if your'e not using them, and perhaps move a PCI sound card into a different slot so it's not conflicting with an on-board device. If you have 2 software PNP Enumerators, remove one of them. And if you're trying to fix something, fix one thing a at time so remove one of the audio devices and concentrate on the other one. The problem should be their drivers.

I just purchased a new external USB sound card for my laptop, and the issue remains. The device is enabled and working with it's own drivers, but windows does not see an audio device. Again, under sounds and audio devices, hardware tab, if i go to properties of the USB sound card, the device itself plus the midi devices and mixers all give the "driver is enabled but not started" error. This is true of both my internal sound and the USB external sound. How can I believe it's the drivers for the sound card? It must be a windows XP problem of some sort which none of the above fixes has resolved.

Hi, I also had the "No Audio Device" problem. This fixed it: Click on Administrative Tools > Services and make sure "Windows Media" service is running. If it is not, right-click on this service and select "start".

Thanks to everyone who sent replies to help. We have an MSI K7N420 Pro nVidia nForce motherboard, and I was using the on-board sound card. After an nVidia driver update (maybe 3 years ago), I lost the sound and could never get it back. I tried everything I could think of, searched it online etc etc. I even installed a separate sound card, thinking that maybe the on-board sound card died. Since I could get the sound back, upon installing Windows into another partition, I understood that this was a Windows problem. Even after then, I could not find the solution. Since we don't really need sound, I decided to live with it; but the problem was still bugging the neurons deep in my brain :P I was looking online, every now and then, to find a solution. And yesterday, I found this thread here, which made my day! After living with this problem for maybe more than 3 years, and trying to solve it, I finally did it with your help. Thank you, this was your new-year present for me :) Take care...

Tony, how does one remove the extra PNP software enumerator? If I right-click on either of them, there is no "delete", "remove" or "uninstall" option available. The extra copy is causing a Code 42 error in the Microsoft kernel DLS synthesizer, the Microsoft kernel SS Wavetable synthesizer , the Microsoft Kernel Acoustic Echo Controller and the Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter.

I have this problem, too. I have a Toshiba laptop and I haven't had any sound for 7 months now. When I stumbled upon this site, I was very hopeful. I was about to post a whole new topic, but I read the thing where it said you should search first. I, too, already have the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator.

On my laptop, the (!) is next to the Crystal WDM Audio Codec. The problem is a Code 10, which I think already has been mentioned. I've tried troubleshooting it, but nothing works. If anybody was in the same situation I'm in, ANY info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi to all! This message goes out to all of you who hadn't the luck to get their sound back to life with the given solutions in this thread: I followed all steps, but still my "PnP software enumerator" (or in german "PnP Softwaregeräte Enumerator") told me that he couldn't load the needed drivers. Consequently I had still no sound. I also made a windows repair install, but the problem was still there. After hundreds of trial & errors I finally came to a solution for WIN XP!: 1.) Deinstall your sound drivers. Save streamci.dll and swenum.sys and machine.inf to a temp folder as mentioned above. 2.) Deinstall your failing "PnP software enumerator". 3.) Go into the registry via regedit or the editor of your choice. In there close all keys so you just see "my work", "workplace" or whatever the englisch name for the german "Arbeitsplatz" is (it has a little computer symbol next to its name, I guess you know what I mean.) 4.) Then search for "swenum". Delete every key that you find. Before you do so I highly recommend to create a system restore point or a backup of your registry, just in case something goes wrong. You have to delete the whole key, not just the line with "swenum" in it. For example: You'll find the word "swenum" in a key where you can also find "pnp software enumerator" and some other entries. Again :You have to delete the whole key. On the left side you see an open folder in which you are in right now, deleteing this folder means to delete the whole key. Do so, it the quickest and easiest way. If there comes a warning that you don't have the permission to do so, right click the folder and give yourself the permissions to delete the folder ;-) Do this for all keys where you find the "swenum" in it. You should find about 5-10 keys. 5.) After you finished close the editor and reopen it again. Research the registry to make sure their is no more swenum entry. 6.) Restart, then check your registry again. Just for the case Win XP has reinstalled something. If you find another "swenum" entry delete it. Do also search for "PnP software enumerator". If you have done right before you shouldn't find anything. If you do anyway, delete the whole key again. 7.) Go to "windows/system32/drivers" and delete swenum.sys. Also go to "windows/system32" and delete the file streamci.dll (don't do that if you have forgotton to follow step1 of my description!) 8.) Now reinstall your "PnP software enumerator" following the steps mentioned in the posts above. (In the hardware manager click "have disk" and choose your temp folder and the inf file in there, choose "PnP software enumerator" under standard devices or something like that). 9.) If you have done right you should have the "PnP software enumerator" back without showing any errors. If you have done right Win XP shouldn't ask you to restart. Now install your sound drivers, restart and be happy again. I hope this solution did the trick for those who didn't find the posts above solving their problems. for Win2000, which is a good thing.

I would never have been able to find this solution without all the other recommendations
given in this thread, so my thx go out to all the people, who contributed to solve
this problem.

I really hope we found a final solution and got rid of this probelm. We all should
listen to sound, not silence...;-)

I've tried these steps, but I still get this message in the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator's settings: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" I tried doing "update driver" but this didn't help. Any suggestions?

Mike, I would like to add a few things to help those who may not figure out some of the steps. You can get the file swenum.sys, from your own computer in the windows/drivers cache/i386/drivers.cab left click to open the cab, then right click on swenum.sys to extract and put it in the swenum folder you have created. Then to get the swenum.inf go to windows/inf and copy machine.inf to your swenum folder. Find line 20 which reads Exclude from Select=* and delete it. Your newly created machine.inf will be the .inf you select when you browse to it from adding a new hardware device below. I tried to find these on google and everyone wanted to sell them. Also when you use device manager to reinstall your Plug and Play Enumerator, its a little tricky if you have not done it before. You pick install hardware, say you have already installed the device, go to the bottome pick new hardware, then from the list system device, the the plug and play enumerator, and then browse to you swenum folder and it will install. Thanks for posting this. It fixed my problem, which i had been working on for eight hours.

I desperately need help (don't we all...). I have the "no active mixer devices installed" problem and the software enumerator is there (twice actually) in Device Manager. I uninstalled sound drivers and reinstalled SoundMax which was the factory loaded sound device...but the problem persists. I still have no sound...just bleeps. The microsoft kernel sound 'things' such as splitter, wave mixer etc. say that there is another device installed in the system... Any Help will be gratefully received.

This worked!!! I located both files on my ME Windows CD, but am currently running XP Pro sp2, I simply copied the files to a folder on my harddrive and then went to new hardware and installed browed to the location and rebooted and my sound was finally back!!! In the sound properties I had to go and select, because my modem sound was being picked up at first instead of my sound card, but once I changed it everything worked great!! Thanks for the help

Not adding to this post but additional advice for others: Before doing anything else, first go to System Device Manager and check off "Show Hidden Devices". Most of you will be in for a surprise I'd bet. Often, an item or two has been disabled and only needs to be enabled without needing to install anything else. See for yourself, what first appears to be no error messages in your device manager........

Tony, thank you! The simple fix in the link below fixed the no audio device problem in my Dell 8400 running Windows XP Professional with SP2. A bit of advice: When you go to http://www.tymes.net/swenum/fix-swenum0.htm make note of the steps to follow, because it's hard to get back to that screen to reference them and also go through the various menus. Copy the lines shown to Word or Notepad. If you don't get the right menus, go back to your Word or Notepad file, re-select the last line, then go to the DOS prompt with the proper directory, paste it back in again, and hit enter. Also, if you have a temp directory and don't want to mess it, make a temp1 directory instead and, in the command lines, where it says temp, do temp1 instead. Sound is back! Thank you again. Carleton

I just tried all of this and still don't have sound on my WinXP Pro machine. I have an ASUS A7N8K as mentioned earlier. I can hear the motherboard pass the memory test and . . . . 'now booting from operating system', but still no sound. After trying these steps I did notice that my volume control on my players is not grayed out anymore. While I was restarting I had all of my hardware try to reinstall while I was trying to get the allmachine.inf installed. Should I unplug everything? I really don't know what else to try.

Hello to all,

I got much useful information from this topic, but none of them resolved my sound
problem. I use Windows XP SP2 on an Asus V7V8X and a Creative SB Audigy. I also tried
removing the SB card and enabling the built in VIA AC 97 without success.

Then I tried removing and adding back the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator
as you suggested without success.

Then I went further reinstalling some of the kernel sound drivers and that resolved
the issue in my case so I describe my steps.

First I suggest everyone to create a System Restore point to have something to return
in case of something goes wrong. You can boot XP to safe mode by pressing F8 at the
beginning of the Windows startup and select Safe Mode if the system doesn’t start
in normal mode and use System Restore there to go back to the working configuration.

Then try these steps only if the others mentioned here don’t help. I had everything
ok in Device Manager and every driver was running that should, compared to an other
working system, but the symptom was that there was no sound coming out from the sound
card. Everything was OK in the Device Manager, but in the Sounds and Audio Devices
Control Panel there was only the Voice recording option on the Voice tab, and the
MIDI music playback (without the sound card being in the list) on the Audio tab active.
The others like Voice playback, Sound playback, Sound recording and everything on
the Volume tab was grayed out.

1. Create the restore point.

2. On the System Properties panel, Advanced tab, Environment Variables button, under
the User variables click New and create a variable named devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
with the value of 1.

3. Open the Device Manager and select Show hidden devices from the View menu.

4. Under the Sound, video and game controllers group, find your sound card(s) and
disable it/them (don’t need to uninstall).

5. Then uninstall the following devices:
- Microsoft Kernel Audio Splitter
- Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device
- Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
- Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver

6. Select Scan for hardware changes from the Action menu. Now the system should redetect
and reinstall the deleted devices automatically. You may get non signed driver warnings,
click continue.

7. Enable the devices you disabled in step 4. You may need to restart the computer.
The problem should be disappeared, you should be able to play sounds.

Good luck!

Ven

Hello All,

I have a medion computer witn windows xp and service pack 2. Here are some of my
symptoms below for those spending many hours searching for the right forum and issue.
Eventually I just lived without sound for 5 months after giving up on hours of forums
and microsoft help pages and calling people up until i really needed it for a game...
I sure as hell wasnt going to buy a new computer. My original sound card was really
wasnt a card, it was built into the motherboard so you cant take it out like a card,
then after 5 months I bought a new one to put in an empty slot and the same error
crap comes up. Microsoft and card manufactures help pages wont do sh*t. Originally,my
sound card stopped working after I installed service pack 2, then I quickly reinstall
the whole windows and dumping the whole computer to get it to work, and i spent many
hours trying to fix the puzzle, its "like a game of it's own". I thought the sound
card was broken and bought a new one and it still didnt work. when you open a song
on media player, it comes up with a message that the device isnt installed or it
is being used by another program blah blah or somthing similar. In control panel
- sound and audio devices, it shows "No audio device" and everything is grayed out
so you cant select anything. I looked at solutions above and it mentioned checking
Device manager - system devices - plug and play software enumorator, but the plug
and play enumerator WAS PRESENT and it wont let you uninstall it, so i got stuck.
I tried it all and nothing worked EXCEPT for VEN's solution, just follow it and
it should work if you have the same problem as me. It didnt matter what card you
had, both the integrated sound card and my new one work now, so now I have 2 sound
cards working in my computer lol.

It was like finding the holy grail of XP - service pack 2 ultra-messed up sound card
problem

THANKS VEN, SUPER SOLUTION!! A+

Ven, The devices you mention - - Microsoft Audio Splitter - Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device - Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer - Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver Should I absolutely definately have them or are they dependent on what my sound card is? (I don't have them or anything that really correspond in under Sound, video and game controllers (or anywhere else in the device manager). I am showing hidden deivces. What is do have is: - Audio Codecs - Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1773) (WDM) [my sound card - disabled) - Legacy Video Capture Devices - Media Control Devices - Media Control Devices - MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device - Standard Game Port - Video Codecs All of which seems pretty innoffencive. Initially I was missing the PnP Software Enumerator - I've reinstalled that and device manager shows it was working a-ok but device manager still reports that my sound card drivers are enabled but not started... boo hoo

I tried the solution using swenum.inf and swenum.sys as to the problem of no audio with Realtek AC'97 after installing SP2.....and it worked perfectly. How come the techs in HP, Realtek and Microsoft DID NOT KNOW how to solve it?? But Mike knew?? They told me that I need to replace the MB..Boooooo Thank you Mike

I have had XP SP2 installed for about 8-9 months now and my sound just died 5 days
ago -- after a Windows Update for .Net Framework. (hmmm... I wonder...)

I have an ASUS 4P4-800 Deluxe mobo with onboard SoundMax audio. After messing around
with it from Mon evening to Tues afternoon, I figured it was the onboard audio...
so I ordered a sound card (the Turtle Beach Montego DDL since I have had problems
with Creative in the past -- and I got a good price!).

Anyway, the same problems came up. The driver installed, but not started. Strange
though that Windows Media Player just did it's thing when I loaded it, the video
moved but no sound! MusicMatch gave me an error though. The PnP SW Emulator is
there, so I will be trying King's solution first and then Ven's if the first fails.
(Although I do not have all the same audio devices he lists, I guess the standards
such as audio codec, etc should be dealt with in the same manner.)

In advance, I would like to thank you all for your posts. I, as many others have
said, can not believe that the hardware and software manufacturers don't give these
sane suggestions to the users! And thank you to the Annoyances.org people for having
this website!

I will be back in the next few days to post an update on what worked/didn't work
-- hopefully one of the fixes will work!

Well, I did one of the two fixes so far. Since I had the PnP SW Emulator installed
already, I did Ven's fix. I now have the drivers loaded! I can get the Turtle Beach
Control Panel open and the card is in the Windows Sound setup! I don't get any errors
when trying to load a sound file!

BUT: I still don't have sound. I tried another pair of powered speakers, thinking
that my speakers may have also gone bad, but no, the other ones didn't work either.

Does this sound like the PnP SW Dev Emulator is bad? Since it is such a long, involved
fix and instructions say to do only if one does NOT have the PnP SW Device Emulator,
I hesitate to do that fix.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi There I have just downloaded C-Media AC97 Audio Device from Windows Update. Right after it, my sound stopped working. I tried reinstalling my original sound driver from my CD, but it did not have any effect at all. There is no error message of any sort. According to my computer, my sound driver is working perfectly, and I double checked the cable connections to make sure that everything is in place. Everything is working as it should be, except there is just no sound coming out of my speaker. Any help is appreciated. I am using Windows XP SP2, and just ran the latest update. Thanks

I think I accidently deleted my sound device when trying to clean up my computer in control panel. Since then whenever I try and play a song in Media player it says: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. I have since been to control panel and clicked on 'sound & audio devices' it simply says i don't have an audio device. I got downloaded 'mutimedia audio controller' from the dell website and when I try and install it, it says: 'The hardware was not installed because wizard can not find the necessary software' I'm so lost! I have no CD for it, but if thats what I need I have access to them. I have XP as well. Please help!

Hi to all,

as all of you, I have the same problem... My computer refuses to output sound...
I have c-media ac97 onboard audio device (on Windows XP sp2), and everything was
fine until few days ago (I don't know what happened!!!).
It seems like the audio device is fine but I get the "driver is enabled but has not
been started" message (when I go to the properties of the audio device).
I have also noticed that the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator has this irritating
exclamation mark next to it (the error is: "This device is not working properly because
Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)").

I've tried all the suggestions on this thread and I still can't get rid of the error.
I've also tried to uninstall/reinstall the audio device...Nothing helps!!!

When I'm trying to delete some of the registry keys (Ven's suggestion) I get this
error: "cannot delete swenum. Error while deleting key" although I gave myself permissions.

One more thing: I have two HD and on each one of them I have Windows XP (I'm not
sure if the other one has sp2 - It's my backup drive) and everything works perfectly
when I boot from the backup drive - So I'm sure this is a software problem!!!!

I'm totally helpless!! Somebody please help me...

thanks in advance,
Alex.

Alex, I have had this problem twice now in the last year. Fortunately after the first time, I printed out the two fixes so I was able to use again last week. I too got the error on deleting the keys, but the fix still worked. I did the "King" PnP Emulator fix FIRST, then the "Ven" device delete/restore second. You may have to try it again, doing them in that order. I am not sure if one only will work or if done in the opposite order. My heartfelt thanks go to King & Ven for providing the ONLY working solutions! Mari

Over 2 years after the initial s.o.s. message, your solution still works like a charm! I also knew what the problem was--that pesky M.I.A. PnP device enumerator--but I couldn't seem to get it back into the system no matter what & how many times I reinstalled the drivers. (only it was maybe 6 hours of brain drain-there's No possible way I'd let it go on for 6 months, as 1 of the posts here said about their problem-Yikes!) You'd be amazed at the frequency this problem plagues systems-well, maybe You wouldn't be amazed at how many poor souls are suffering--but your's was the only answer that worked!! Thank You SO Very Much, you guys really are Great! Cheers!

I was able to get swenum.inf from a Windows 98 SE cd that I once used. But I think the procedure to modify machine.inf does the same thing. Unfortunately for me, nothing seems to work. I run XP Professional with SP2. The odd thing for me is that I had once installed Windows XP Pro and the sound worked fine. Then I independently added SP2 and the sound worked fine. Then I discovered I had a bogus copy of Windows XP Pro and decided to fix that by buying a fully legitimate copy of XP Pro from a reputable vendor. It came with SP2 already on it. With help from Microsoft Tech Support, I installed my new XP Pro with SP2 over my existing installation so I could be legal (I had an installation problem and needed Microsoft to resolve it). After successfully doing that, no more sound. I have the usual symptoms as described by many in this forum. I didn't know it right away and hung up with Microsoft. Once I discovered the problem, I called back on the same Case Number only to have Microsoft conclude that the problem was with my hardware (SoundBlaster Live Model SB0060US). What a joke. The card was fine before I decided to do the "right thing" and get a legitimate copy of XP Pro. Just for fun, I installed the same card in another computer running Win 98 and it worked fine. So here I am after two months with no sound. I am a musician and use an electronic keyboard to compose songs in my computer using the MIDI interface of my sound card. I also convert tapes and records into MP3 format to create my own library of songs. So think of the pain that I am undergoing without having sound. I tried both methods (King and Ven in that order), but neither of them solved the problem. Short of going the FDISK route and rebuilding everything from scratch with no promises that this will solve the problem, does anybody have any suggestions for me. If I can't solve this problem, Linux is starting to sound better and better to me especially now that Microsoft is heading in the direction of forcing me to buy a new license if I change motherboards. Thanks, Roger

VEN!

Your solution most closely described my specific conditions (software enumerator
present and working, etc.) so I tried it first.

I have sound!

I own a 16 track semi-commercial recording studio. Having had NO sound for the past
several days had been turning my hair gray and my clients most definitely OFF.

All I can say is . . . God Bless You.

Sincerely,

AAARRRRRRGHHHHH! I checked the pnp enumerator (it is working, or so it says), I tried the method of deleting the drivers in the device manager, and windows still says I have "no audio device" while I have tried both of my sound cards (internal and PCI) for use as an audio device. Windows does recognize my sound cards for the recording and midi playback. I have no idea what to do other than to convert my tower into an expensive boat anchor. Please help. Can't say how much I appreciate people like you sharing your knowledge with PC novices like myself. Not only you solved a puzzle that was driving me nuts, but you also saved me some bucks of that new sound card I was about to buy, assuming something was wrong with mine after installing Win XP. Finally I got sound after two months of head scratching. Thank you!

Thanks very much for the tech tip to fix the sound card issue. I had never come accross this problem before and it was a stumper. Many thanks and I will add this to my bag of tricks with credit to you. How on earth did you figure this out?

I tried the fix shown here on my Dell running on WinXP. Modified the machine.inf as described and added new hardware. I got the plug and play enumerator to show up. Now I have no sound capabilities at all. It keeps trying to add different sound card kernals from windows. I tried to uninstall them all, but they just keep showing up. It has caused so many conflicts with my machine that I had to completely disable my soundcard or else it hangs up trying to do anything and bootup takes nearly ten minutes. How can I put it back to what it was before I started all of this? System Restore does nothing. I can't figure out a way to uninstall the plug and play enumerator. I'm tempted to try putting in a new sound card, but it doesn't sound like that will accomplish anythinf for me. I really don't want to wipe my computer and start over (I don't even know if that would fix it). Please help.

Just wanted to add my slightly different experience to the thread. Started with no sound, and had yellow cross against WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver – Error 38, Driver could not be loaded. Uninstall/Reinstall resulted in the ‘not suitable for this platform error’ for a device called ‘MEDIA’. So I tried the swenum de/reinstall (great instructions btw – good job), and tried to (re)install WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver, the install still didn’t work. So I had ‘Unknown Device’, ‘MEDIA’ in Sound, Video and game Controllers, and no sound. I used Update Driver on the Unknown Device, allowed it to look on Windows update, and it worked – I now have sound back ! (Now I need to Ghost onto a new HDD because of the bad sectors I keep finding, I think this is the real source why I lost it in the first place.) Lesson two is that it’s taken me a while to get this sorted – don’t give up !

I've been having similar problems to what has been mentioned here. I have Windows XP embedded. The sound had stopped working on my computer, when I went to sound devices everthing was greyed out, and I was told no sound devices present. So I went to device manger and it said everything was working properly, all apart from Microsoft Kernel wave audio mixer. My first thoughts were where the heck did that come from, as it wasn't there before and as far as I know I haven't installed it. So I disabled the device and enabled it, now the sound is working fine (for now). But every time you use the touch screen the computer beeps, like an error beep, but in device manager nothing is wrong. When we use an alternative input method there is no beep. Anyone have any clue? I'm quite lost myself. Cheers

Thank you so much for this helping hand - the machine.inf method worked a treat for me! I was stuck with a machine and no sound (CMedia AC'97 Audio). I had even tried a completely new mainboard in this machine in an effort to resolve the "Driver is enabled but not started" error. Your method saved me from installing a new mainboard into the client's pc. Believe it or not I am a PC Technician (Microsoft and CompTIA Certified) by trade, so it just goes to show that even the experts can use a hand now and then! Thanks again Tony ;)

Thanks VEN, this solution works fine. I had the same problems and tried before the other ways. However after your step 5 it was necessary to do following steps:
5.1 Shutdown Windows
5.2 Open device manager
5.3 Enable the device disabled in step 4

After that windows starts several trials and finaly windows will reinstall the kernel drivers deinstalled in step 5.
Again thanks to VEN!

Hi, I had the same problem with the plug and play system enumerator. probably it occured after deinstallation of a media player. the thread concerning reinstallation of the PnP enumerator didn't work in my case, either the reinstallation of the soundblaster. my solution for the PnP enumerator problem for windows xp user is the following: reinstall the service pack 2 on your computer. you can download it from the microsoft homepage (about 260MB, it's free). due to the reinstallation lots of drivers etc are overwritten. you don't need to uninstall service pack 2 before reinstallation, you can just overwrite it. after the reinstallation, my sound device worked properly.

After trying all methods listed in this huge thread I have not gotten any closer to fixing my "No Audio Device" problem. Any other ideas are welcome. My situation: I have the onboard AC97 device from dell, installs just fine but "No Audio Device" is present for WAV functions, midi works fine. I have tried different versions of the drivers... I had my PNP s. enumerator, but I uninstalled it and removed it from the registry and reinstalled it just fine to no avail... I have even does a recovery install of windows XP Pro (not pirated - from dell) with little change in the situation. I have no restore point to go back to as it happened years ago before I was even asked to fix this issue. My last resort is to completely format and try again but I would rather not do that. If anyone has any more suggestions that would be grand, thanks in advance. --J

Thanks to all for the great advice on this page. I tried the Enable PNP stuff first; that didn’t help. Then I ran through the steps that Ven suggested. These didn’t work straight away, because I was running in normal mode and several of the devices would not uninstall until the computer was rebooted, at which time they would immediately reininstall. So, I booted into safe mode (F2 on startup) first, uninstalled ALL audio devices, and then rebooted by my machine into normal mode. Just to be sure, I rebooted my machine one final time. After the final reboot sound worked perfectly. Thanks for all the great this problem.

My wife's Toshiba Satellite fell victim to the "no audio devil" somewhere along the

I stumbled on this forum and Ven's solution. It worked "right out of the box!"

One thing you might check, if using iTunes, is the QOS Packet Scheduler in the Network
Connection you use to connect to the Internet.

I discovered, quite by accident, a conflict between QOS and iTunes, on my wife's
Toshiba, after correcting the earlier problem.

I can't explain why the conflict exists, except to say that the 20% of the bandwidth
reserved by QOS may clash with iTunes. Setting it to 0% seems to have resolved the
issue on this particular computer...which is the only one of ours to manifest this
audio problem.

My guess is that there are a host of issues on any given system which might contibute
to this problem...so there may be no "one size fits all" solution.

Any updated suggestions would be great

FYI: I never had a problem with the sound until a few days ago. Computer was getting

device emulator failure, so same as what you all have experienced. I redid my computer

Just for the record, I struggled with this problem for months, reinstalled the PnP enumerator several times -which only provided a temporary fix. The problem finally disappeared altogether when I deactivated the MS SQL server, which I'd installed along with Microsoft's Express Edition development tools. Steve

I hope that I have placed my response/query in the right place. If not, blame it on my inexperience. After a major system failure, I reinstalled Windows XP Home on my PC, found that I had no sound and saw that the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator had the yellow `problem' symbol. I uninstalled PnPSDE and hoped to reinstall it easily. Having run into problems, I searched Goggle and found this site and thread. I followed the advice initially given by Tony Maques and created a c:\temp folder and copied the relevant files swenum.sys, streamci.dll and a copy of machine.inf from which I deleted `ExcludeFromSelect=*' line. When I tried to Add New Hardware, I was and still am unable to find PnPSDE among the System Tools. Hence, I cannot install it or move on to the next step and install the relevant drivers. Any suggestions?

same problem, half fixed...:-|

I had the same no audio problem that suddenly appears and my solution was the last post mentioned, manually uninstall P&P software enumerator drivers (deleting actually just one registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet0001\services\swenum ) rebooting and then uninstalling it from device manager. Then reinstall P&PSWENUM again with the well known directions mentioned above, that bring audio to live in my PC but I have a new problem, each time I reboot the audio is dead again and the audio card drivers showing the message "the driver is enabled but has not been started", then, to bring audio to live again, I have to update P&PSwENUM driver from device manager installing from 2 diferent versions of machine.inf alternatelly (one with the ExcludeFromSelect=* line deleted and the other with this line included thus I question the utility of this step in the "well known directions") and each time I do the process the audio back to live in my PC (whitout need for rebooting), however, this is becoming tedious since each time I restart the PC I have to repeat process, anyone know´s how to close the fix making WinXP permanently recognizing my audio device drives each time I reboot the PC. P.D. It brings my attention that each time I actualize P&PSWenum a message warning me that the driver is not digitally signed appears, I suspect maybe this has something to do with the problem but not sure.... Any sugestions??? Thnks in advance...

I had the same problem until I uninstalled the sound driver, uninstalled the pnp, deleted the 2 files previously mentioned. rebooted. reinstalled the pnp enumerator. The last problem was that HP defines the soundriver as Conexant when in fact it was a Via Composite Audio. I downloaded the drivers from Via and had no more problems. This was on an HP ZE1210 Viaarena led me to the correct chipset info with How to identify your PC components using SiSoftware Sandra at http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=5&ArticleID=90

suggestion: Use a detailed subject - Cleanup forum

Only a few individuals have bothered to include a useful subject to their post.
Five million "thank you" posts make it hard to wade through all of this to get to
the helpful information.

There is a lot of fluff in this thread, yet it is full of great info. Too bad the
fluff can't be easily sorted out.

Perhaps the moderator could clean up the posts and organize all of the "thank you"
posts into one folder. That way people looking for detailed info don't have to browse
through so many posts. Personally, I don't want to read hundreds of thank you notes.

Also, maybe the users on this forum could think about the people who might be here
after them. Consider how your actions affect others (good advice for all things
in life). Use a detailed subject title. Is your post a question? Is your post
an answer? Is your post a Thank You?

The people that visit this forum after you will appreciate you taking an extra three
seconds to have consideration for them. I know I always do. There are a few folks
here who have good forum etiquette.

I know that the rest don't mean to do anything wrong. So now hopefull some of them
will have learned something and will post more responsibily.

This has been a very helpful thread. I only wish I didn't have to spend hours just
reading this one. Not to mention all of the other sites and forums I've read to
research this problem.

Big thanks to annoyances.org!!!

Problem solved- I was having same or similar problem after I installed mp3 player. Downloaded Realtek AC97 audio driver package 4.03 Driver link at - http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/ac97.html Installed driver (Installer included with this so it was just a point and click procedure). Home page link- http://www.softwarepatch.com/ (More complicated to find download on this page) Looking at various search hits it seems that there is a software glitch with mp3 players and audio drivers… Thanks everyone in the forums

An alternative method is to re-install Plug & Play Software Device Enumerator. Not sure if it was mentioned above, but double click it to open up properties, click on driver and do update, then do not search, I will choose, and choose same one again. It seemed to work for me so far, hp z545 realtek hd audio Another step I took which may have done the trick was to disable the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio-- listed in plug & play devices just above the device enumerator... this may not work for all, but seems to be good for me now, did not even need a reboot happy new year & good luck to all!

You can find the two files "swenum.inf" & "swenum.sys" on Windows 98 Installer. They are within the files "Precopy2.cab" & "Base5.cab respectively. Extract them then place on one folder. Run "Add New Hardware", select "Add New Hardware Device", select "System Device", select "Have Disk" then browse to the folder and select the file "swenum.inf".

King,
I attempted your fix, but it did not work. One possible reason for the failure may
have been because I was not able to delete all of the "swenum" keys. In any case,
I was still able to resolve the issue so I thought I would add an alternate route
for those who cannot get it working even after trying your fix:

All I did was do a repair installation of Windows XP. For those of you who have
never done this, follow these steps...

NOTE: Before doing the repair installation, the PnP Software Enumerator was installed
(but broken, with the yellow icon) and my audio drivers were installed. I'm not
sure if it made a difference, but that was where I was before doing the following.

1) Insert your Windows XP CD and reboot your computer.
2) You will be booting from the CD, so make sure you have your BIOS set to boot from
CD-ROM before booting from hard drive.
3) It will ask you what you would like to do, choose install (do NOT choose repair
console, this is not the same as a repair installation).
4) After some setup, it will ask you if you would like to do a new installation or
repair an old one. Press 'R' to repair the old one.
5) Follow the steps to complete the installation.

HTH,
Andrew

isnt this trouble quite annoying. I speak for everyone that this tread was helpful. about this one i am quoting below, i dont know if i did it incorrectly but when i did this, it did work for a couple of hours before it did the same media player error saying it couldnt find the hardware necessary. so thought it worked, i ended up doing the same procedure everytime i lost my sounds. that tire me so i stopped that and contended myself having i also did the comand prompt solution listed here, but sort of work, but also made my computer slow at start up. i dont know what mess i made myself blunder into. at the end, i just restored my system to a point before all this misfortunes happened. and it worked. i remembered that this problem occurred when i misfortunately clicked on the windows update, and media player itself updated. im not sure if that is the cause, but seems like it. after i have reinstalled every possible driver, tried this one i quoted below, and did the emulator solution, i restored my system to a certain point (which i remember before the update carried on) so if all doesnt work, you might want to try restoring your system. this forum is really helpful. thanks to all

I found this site that explains to you how to restore your sound. Good luck. After uninstalling V2i from Symantec I was asked to reboot my notebook. The reboot took for ever so I decide after 30 minutes to switch it off. Problems started when I rebooted, lots of drivers where missing and it seems that I lost the plug and play features. One of the first driver I decided to recover was the Sound driver. This is the way I recover from that sound driver issue. 1. In services, check that WinAudio service is enabled, set to automatic, and running. 2. In Device Manager, System Devices check that Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is installed and running If not , then you need to reinstall it: 1. Copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to your desktop 2. Remove line ExcludeFromSelect=* 3. Use Add new hardware wizard using the Have Disk option 4. Select the machine.inf you saved on the desktop 5. Install Plug and Play Software Device If the sound card is listed in the device manager, then uninstall it and start a scan for hardware changes. Afer installing it again I got the sound back live. I did the same for several other drivers that were missing on my notebook. And now it seems to be ok. http://weblogs.asp.net/lkempe/archive/2004/07/07/175765.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage Also one more tip when you click on add new hardware. show all devices Standard system devices Plug and play software enumerator

I'd make a new post for your question rather than burying it in this huge and ancient thread. The way this forum works is that questions and answers are posted here so that everyone can benefit - I doubt anyone will call you, certainly not from the country where I live !! I have some ideas and will reply when you re-post the question.
