Hey guys I have a question...... My computer is restarting alone after it has been shut down for more than 10 minutes...this varies a bit...it can be 2 or 30 minutes ....it started happening after I fixed someones computer.... I hooked up my keyboard, mouse and monitor to his rig ...after I was done, I hooked everything back up to my rig and everything worked fine.... but about 3 minutes after the first shutdown the computer restarted automatically.... I've searches extensively in the forums...but I haven't been able to find a solution...everybody seems to have a problem shutting down....but I can shutdown fine....it just restarts after a while.....I really don't want to have to reformat the harddrive again and reinstall windows....I already had to do it once... hopefully someone has a response.... thanks in advance

You have a worm. Download "Fixblaster tool" And update your computer using the new micorsoft security pack. Use google to find fixblaster. The worm is called "blaster"

thanks for the reply Mike....but I used to have the "restarting message problem"....and I downloaded the patch a long time ago....my problem is different ...the computer turns on by itself after minutes of being shut down....which is pretty weird...the time varies from seconds to 30 minutes....and I have found no solution to this yet....

Is it possible your network card is set to "wake on lan" or you modem is set to "wake
on ring". You might want to investigate these two devices to see if they have this
capability, and are configured this way.

See my reply in this thread: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/n1066231149

Additionally make sure the keyboard isn't set to power up the computer in the BIOS.
Disconnect the KB and see what happens. We are seeing this problem more and more
in the forum so it has been interesting to find out what people find. There is an
outside chance that the KB controller could be doing this so make sure the power
up by the KB is disabled in the BIOS as well as all other powerup options. If it
is a bad KB controller, it means replacing the motherboard. This is why it is important
to pull the plug from the wall or turn off the switch on the powersupply (if so equipped
and leave it plugged in which keeps the system grounded) and wait for about 1 minute
to drain power from the PS and motherboard before disconnecting any peripheral from
the motherboard. I have observed KB controllers destroyed by less.. Do you have
a PS2 connection KB or a USB? Post back on what happens.. Reformatting and reinstalling
XP won't fix this. It's a problem on the hardware side. C K

Thanks everybody for the responses..... I reinstalled the keyboard... the problem sems to happen less....but the problem is still there.... and about the reformating and reinstalling windows....I did it once...and it got rid of the problem...if I would of known what coused the problem in the first place I would of never removed stuff from the back of my computer again....I checked the KB power up options in the BIOS...but they were disabled....so I'm not left with many more options.... one more reason I have to switch to linux.... thanks again ...
