Windows XP hangs at 'Windows is Shutting Down' screen

Hi, I would be greatful if anyone can help! When I shut down Windows XP it hangs
at the screen 'Windows is Shutting Down' for about 5 minutes, then closes. It is
slow to start also, about 2 minutes. I can see nothing obvious, and although I may
have downloaded an update, I can't remember.

you can try bios defaults and power drain(disconnect all cables from the back of
the system and keep the power button on the system pressed for 20 seconds.)also try
going into safe mode and uninstall the ACPI power options in the device manager.

Also check just how many startup programs and utilities you are running. The more
you load, the longer it takes to both start and shut down. Drop some of the none
essentials and see if it shortens the time

XP can take a "long" time to shut down if you have the security settings set to delete
the page file at each shutdown, but I don't think that can account for five minutes
of shutdown.
What's your antivirus and anti-spy/scumware status?

I seldom have delays at startup. But at shutdown I've seen delays of several minutes
if there are other users logged on.
In particular I have an account with admin rights that I use for getting Windows
updates, etc. Sometimes if I leave that account logged on and especially if there
are programs running, it can take several minutes to shutdown from my normal non-admin
account.

Sorry I do not know how to check whether my security settings are set to delete the
page file at each shutdown. My Antivirus & Spyware are new - I uninstalled the old,
and installed new after the problem started happening. I use AntiVir XP and Ad-aware
6.0.

Yes, but what does it mean when you go to shutdown, and a dialog pops up warning
you that there are other users logged on, and shutting down may cause them to lose
data, OWTTE...
*What* other users? There's nobody here but me! Am I being hacked or something? My
cable internet connection is hooked up to a router/switch that has a firewall running,
and this XP laptop uses that as a gateway. I'm not running a firewall locally, but
I guess I could. But none of my other machines seem to display this behaviour.
