HI, I got a laptop from a relative, and it has a hard drive about 10gb. However there are no programs, only a dvd software. My question is does the floppy drive or dvd drive use any of the hard drive cause it says i already used 2gb, leaving me with 8...... or by installing windows do some files use up the hard drive( ~2gb in my case)....if i re-install windows xp, will i have the full 10gb......... hope someone answers this thx

Is the total capacity of your drive 10gb? or is that the free space left? Win XP
uses around 1.5gb. Your DVD sofware could easily use another 0.5 gb.

Reinstalling Windows will not reclaim any drive space.

Hey...everybody started out ignorant of puters...it takes time. The actual drives are called hardware....hardware, needs software to run (for the most part)...having a cd drive and floppy drive in of itself has no effect on the hdd...but,you need drivrs(software) to operate the the cd and floppy drive...these (software) drivers are written to the Hdd...(virtual drives are another ballgame but same idea)....;)
