One more time ... How do I stop....?

This is a repeat of a post I made about a week ago. I got several replies but alas, they didn't help. I'm giving it another go, hoping someone else may have the answer.

Got XP, home, with dial-up connection. No matter how I start to surf the web (using a desktop shortcut to a website, or opening Internet Explorer to my home page, or opening it to a blank page (using about:blank) and then clicking on a site from my favorites list), I get a box on-screen telling me the webpage is not available offline (I know that!) and to view it I should click on connect. I get this box even if I first connect to the net before opening my browser and going to a website. This happens only when I first try to go to a website in a session -- once I've gone to a site (after being forced to click on that connect button), the message doesn't show up again during the rest of the session. But next day when I go to surf, I get the same on-screen message. I want to get rid of this message and having to click on the connect button. (I also have much the same thing happen when I first open Outlook Express -- even if I am already connected to the internet, I get a similar message.) Any help out there? Thanky, thanky.

I don't know how to fix properly but the cause is either IE or OE working "offline" (you can check this in the File menu). It is more related to how you last used the app than the opening of it, if you disconnect from the net and leave the app open, it will automatically go to offline when it tries to refresh the page. The only solution I know is to close IE/OE before disconnecting.

I usually do close the browser before disconnecting from the net. Are you saying I should do the reverse to avoid the message? Thnx.

Nope, you're doing it the "right" way (if there is such a thing!). I assume your homepage is set to "about:blank" and if so, when you open IE and check the file menu is "Work Offline" checked?? I don't know what it is but there must be an option (or registry hack) to make IE always open 'online'. Have you tried searching the MS knowledge base? Dial up or cable?

Well, I can't speak for the original poster as to the questions you raise. I came across this thread and asked you my question above because I also have had that message complained of, saw your response and was interested if the message could be avoided by shutting down differently. No, I haven't researched it on the web. Now that you have mentioned it, though, I'll take a look at my File menu "work..." setting the next time I close and open IE. I gather the original poster isn't getting any quick solution to the problem.

If its any help, just came accross this in the "help" section (which is generally unhelpful but...) "When you choose to work offline, Internet Explorer will always start in Offline mode until you click Work Offline again to clear the check mark." Other than that, I'm stumped!

I go away for a little bit, and come back to all this activity. Tanx for your input, Helen -- I'll take a look-see & see if any joy. I've got dial-up. I've tried both about:blank and a set homepage -- same thing happens - that %&@#$ message. Nope, haven't checked out the M$ site -- it's so sloooooooow. Guess I better - (sigh). Was hoping someone here would have an answer to this annoyance, and save me that annoyance.

LOL!! Things move quick around here! Do check the "work offline" on the file menu, it sounds simple, but if its checked, what you originally described happens. (and yes, the MS site on dial up is no fun!)

Probably won't help, but try Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab > uncheck "Internet
Explorer should check to see.......
Browse as usual, and it should eventualy ask you if you want to make Internet Explorer
your default browser. Check yes. It may just help your problem.

Tankie for your input, but I've already got unchecked that IE should check to see...., and IE is the only browser I've got. I'm still doing some look-see after Helen's input. Might be getting closer to an answer why it happens (doesn't mean I've got a solution).

An Answer, I think, but no good fix

Ok y'all ------
I've been watching Internet Explorer when I shut down & start up. I think Helen was onto something before when she said to watch if IE's file menu 'work offline' is checked or not when you close IE out and start it up. When I open IE, if 'work offline' is checked, I'll get that #$%&%#$ message when I try to go to a website. But if I uncheck 'work offline' first, presto = no message.

So the message pops up because 'work offline' is checked. But why would it be checked? 'Cause you've been working offline !

I found that when I close IE and unhook from the net, and then work offline with some webpages I saved, sure 'nuff, next day when I fire-up IE, the 'work offline' file menu item is checked and unless I uncheck it, I'll get the message when I try to go to a website. If I don't work offline with saved webpages between on-line sessions of IE, then 'no problemo' -- no checked 'work offline' item and no message when I next launch IE to a webpage.

After all that, the sad part is, I still don't have a permanent fix. Thank you M$ !

Yo Helen, FYI, take a look at my 'Answer' post this date, if you're interested.

Hey there, Thanks for that. Yep, seems you're stuck with it - its a "feature"! LOL!! There are lots of "features" in XP, took me a couple of weeks to disable what I could. If you want to use IE and not have an active internet connection seems your stuck... think its MS's way of saying "go broadband"! (but where I am it's still too expensive to bother).
