this might work, go to an image, whatever file type it is, right click on it, click
open with, then choose program. choose the program you want to change it to, make
sure the box is ticked: "always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
then click ok, every time u open this type of file it will open in whichever program
u selected.
( im not sure what the other way is )

The other way is to do it in folder options. Find the extension and click change.
then pick the program that you want to open with. The picture viewer is the default
program in XP.

Additional info re viewer problems: 1)" Adobe 6.0 Reader has encountered a problem
and needs to close" occurs when trying to read pdf files. Adobe prepares a comprehensive
report (to whom?). 2) Viewpoint Media Player AIM Installer Setup aborts the process
part way through. Thought this info might add insight on the problem.
