I have a question about How
do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes: . if i restart explorer,
many apps which minimise to the small panel near the clock do not show up, although
the processes are runnig they dont appear again. The only way to get them visible
again seems to be to restart then, yet the same problem may occur.
Also, sometimes explorer crashes if i end task internet explorer! why is that?

1st, are the icons just hidden? Have you tried clicking on the << in the taskbar
just to the left of the system tray to see if the icons are hidden.
2nd, look in your Event Viewer under Administrative Tools on the Start menu to see
if any error messages have been logged when Windows Explorer crashes.

nope, they are not hidden. If explorer crashes, many of my systray icons just disapear.
as for the administrative tools, all it says is that the shell stopped unexpectedly
and explorer.exe was restarted.
Ona side note, thi appears to be a general bug in windows, from whiat i found out.
It seems that when explorer crashes, windows requests the applicatios running to
redraw the systray icons (that is if windows requests, maybe the application has
to check). However, many apps fail to do so, like windvd and so many others that
all i can say is barely any support it. This is highly annoying, some processes may
be minimised but it may be critical to gauge their progress, but there is no possible
way to do so unless u restart it.
If anybody could tell an alternative method toredraw the icons, please let me know.
I am not interested in traysavers and such, any other ay?

I don't recall anything specifically about a general bug in Windows as you describe,
but the trick then is to stop your crashes back to the desktop. Returning to the
Event Viewer, there should be more info (so-called "error signature") about the error:
source, category, event ID, and description. I assume you getting no BSODs?

What are the other 3 aspects of the logged error, and in the Event Viewer is the
error under system, application or security?

Having this same problem. System did not crash. It began to happen after the latest
security upgrade from microsoft. I still get the Norton Antivirus an internet firewall
icons each time I boot up but all the other ones disappeared. some of them come back
once in a while but it is very erratic. They show up in the customize notifications
as past items but are still running. Sure would like to find a fix.

If you ever find a real solution, I would appreciate that you post it to me at Panther_Lover@hotmail.com.
In my case, Explorer crashes when I click on the QuickLaunch icons, to open a folder.
Then, the taskbar disappears for a few seconds, reappears with many icons in the
tray, but a few ones are missing. The applications are still running, but the icon
dont show up. Nothing precise is reported in the event viewer...

The problem is quite simple.
When the explorer restarts after it's crashed, it sends a message to the applications
having icons in the tray, so that they can put them back there. If an application
doesn't take that into account, its icons wan't be back in the tray once the explorer
is restarted ; that's why some icons disappear while others don't.
Bottomline is if one application's icon doesn't show up after a crash, the only thing
to do is to restart the application (possibly after killing it with the task manager).
There's nothing you can do about that.

I am having the same annoyance as being described here... I guess I can give a bit
more info into WHEN my system performs this shell restart..... I run Mozilla, which
never performs a crash and shutsdown with event ID 1002 and shell restart, but when
I use IE 6..... quite often I get the Event ID 1002, shell had to shut down and
restart... icons in tray dissapear and some reappear... It happens WHEN I open a
folder OR doubleclick IE6...... I try to use Mozilla Firebird whenever possible,
but have to use IE sometimes... I would much prefer to be able to fix this.... I
wonder if I reinstall IE6 everything would be okay? (prob not!) Please Help....

I have the same problems you mention. FlashFXP seems to vanish when my explorer
crashes, and it doesn't seem to come back. Same happens with IRC.
A real annoyance when you have important data on both and don't want to kill the
process.

I too have the same problem you discribe. One thing I have notice is the Microsoft
icons such as the network connection, volume control and messenger disappear and
don't come back. If the problem is with some programs ignoring the refresh request
then why don't the Microsoft icons reappear? You would think MS programs would work
correctly...

I have the same explorer crash, with code 1002, and
loss of some tray icons, in Windows 2000 Pro. I can
reproduce the problem by:
CTRL-R (run)
C:\some\directory\path
RETURN
WindowsKey-E (opens an Explorer.exe window)
I can avoid many of the crashes if i explicity tell RUN
what application to use for a directory read:
CTRL-R
Explorer C:\some\directory\path
It's a drag for me, because I speed up my work by
using key commands as often as possible, and
avoiding the mouse. I also like to avoid double-clicking
on "My Computer", because that takes the time to poll
a whole bunch of devices, some of which may not be
in ready states.
The only ways I have found to make the tray icons to
reappear are less than satisfactory:
- pskill the process, then restart it.
- Restart Windows

I too am running Norton Internet Security 2004, and their icons remain in the tray.

I see a similar problem, but it isn't necessarily tied to an Explorer crash as far
as I can see. There are some tray icons that just don't reappear consistently when
I re-boot, yet I can see that the underlying processes are running by using Task
Manager. APC PowerChute Personal is one of these. And no, they're not simply hidden.
Anybody else see this behavior?

Well this may or may not help to narrow the problem.
This problem started with me following a recent liv update of NIS2003. After some
research it was suggested that this maybe conflict between XP and 2003 for this particular
update (I was also have problems with my broadband speed and the computer had slowed
somewhat as well.) I upgraded to NIS2004 and that worked beautifully - UNTIL I DID
A LIVE UPDATE!!! Arrrgghhhh - back to square one! Uninstalling NIS solves the problem
and returns all the icons but personally I would rather have the protection.
However, the above does seem to confirm that this is an NIS problem.

I have a similar type of problem to those mentioned above - it may or may not be
directly related!!
Windows XP Pro with all the usual anti-virus/adware/spyware software installed and
run often.
An outline of the problem is
1. When I attempt to start any application/System function that uses explorer.exe
I get the "Send to MS" message saying that explorer.exe has caused a problem.
2. Some applications work fine.
3. Everything works fine in Safe-Mode (as far as allowed).
4. Some System tray icons are missing.
5. Using Selective Startup in 'msconfig' does not isolate the problem.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this problem as I have done all the remedial actions
I can think of. Have I overlooked a virus? Or Spyware... or..........
Any help would be appreciated.

I seem to be narrowing down the problem.
There is definately a compatability issue between XP Home and NIS2003 which has only
arisen as a result of a recent update. XP Pro does not seem to have the same problem.
While upgarding to NIS 2004 resolves the system speed and internet speed problems
and prevents the timing out etc, depending whether you have a network installed you
may appear to lose some of your notification icons and have problems with your email.
The problem seems to be caused by the new network identification facility built into
NIS2004. If you are running on a peer to peer network and had other computers running
during the original installation it will set this as the default network, and after
installation and some configuration everything seems to be fine and dandy. But later,
should you boot up and the other pcs are not turned on, NIS thinks "I can't see the
other PCs therefore you must be on a different network, therefore I'm going to screw
up all your settings and block everything in a very unuser friendly way."
Depending on how you use your network the best solution seems to be to uninstall
NIS2004, turn all the other pcs on the network off and reinstall it on the machine
you usually switch on first. You can install it on the others with this machine
still running as it normally would be when you boot them up.
I know this won't solve all the problems being reported in this thread but I know
it has solved mine, and 2 colleagues.
Regards
Mike

I suspect the Explorer.exe crash in XP is due to resources that have been exceeded
or an explorer APP stack failure occured. Or perhaps a permission conflict between
the virus running and the protection of on-access AV scanners.... File Handles and
GUI objects both are much better handled than win98/ME but are not infinite. 98 was
limited to 2MB regardless on how much RAM you had. I have XP Pro with 1GB of RAM
can vouch for dozens of situations on different APPs that are "resource hogs" that
cause Explorer.exe or another APP to crash. Check Ctl-Alt-Del > Process List and
View > Select Columns and add File Handles and GUI Objects. If you have several
apps with handles > 1000, wonder why and reduce it if possible or trim all the fat
in startup APPS and resource hogs. For example AVG is much leaner than NAV and is
adequate. AVAST (ashserve) an A.V. APP can consume 9999 handles when on-access scanning
is monitored in popup lists when , svchost.exe can be sharing many Services to find

and see the # Handles. Don't confuse VM or memory of APP in memory and resources.
Get Proc. Explorer from Sysinternals.com to see and learn.
Your Best tools are un-install, Restore, run SFC /SCANNOW and disable most Startups
and un-ncessary APPS to trim your XP resources and it will run faster and smoother.
But don't discount a worm causing a stack overflow in explorer from the on-access
AV scanner in NAV or the TCP rule scanner in NIS or similar resource hogs.

i think the task manager needs a bring to front option when you right click so we
might be able to pull the program back onto the screen.

Hi guys I had this problem on XP, and I found this to be a good solution. Bare in
mind that editing the registry can be dangerous so please only do it if you confident
with editing it.
Ripped from PcStats weekly newsletter...
====
One thing I find with Windows is that if one part of the system, like the task bar,
has crashed, in order to fix it you have to reset all your 'explorer' functions.
Perhaps I'm just being stubborn, but I like the order of the icons in my taskbar...
Of course you can change this in the registry. First load up regedit (Start -> Run
-> Regedit then press ok) and follow this path HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft
-> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Explorer.
From there create the DesktopProcess DWORD and give it the value 1 which makes explorer
split into many individual services. If this causes your system problems, simply
change the value to 0 to disable.
From now on if you overclock too high, or a piece of software causes your system
to become unstable, you no longer have to mess up your icons or reset explorer. Just
reset the application which has actually locked up. =)

Missing tray icons

My icons started to disappear from the quick launch as also described by many other
users. I followed the link below and disabled the SSDP and the UPPD services. Now
all my missing icons are back. Thanks for the help!

I had a similar problem – no explorer crash but system tray icons would randomly
disappear. After poking around the system I found the following solution.
In Windows XP, right click the taskbar and select Properties. Select the Taskbar
tab and uncheck “Hide inactive icons”.
I hope this helps.

I have Windows XP Professional and if the PC is rebooted without shutting down then
the Quick Launch disappears. Restarting the PC and then right clicking on the taskbar
followed by selecting toolbars and then quick launch brings them all back.
I have Office 2003, Win XP Pro SP2, Norton Systemworks 2004.
It happens on my Laptop too (same config).

Not relevant. I disabled it before and Explorer.exe keeps crashing (rarely, but still
as much as before). I met a similar situation: when trying to delete an AVI file
that Explorer is reading to extract duration, size and all, it crashes, probably
due to an unexpected sharing violation.
(I found this thread googling up a way to react to Explorer.exe crashes, ironically.)

To get open programs back press hold alt+tab, keep holding alt and press tab until
you come to the program. As for restoring notifications... Can't find a fix

I have noticed this too.
That's how I found this thread.
On my systems, it's usually one or two icons:network icon is always there as is antivurus
and pop up blockers.
the ones missing are sound and lately MS antispyware
My systems do not crash either, though I have seen that many times in past MS OS's.
Anyhow, fellas, this is a good thread, let's keep working until somebody figures
this out!

I've had the problem with the icons disappearing from the task bar. This is a new
laptop (Dell), with WinXP Pro. The only remaining icons are for McAfee Virus Scan
and Adaware. After trying many things (and everything everyone else talked about),
I finally tried to at least make my speaker icon appear by going to "Start>Control
Panel>Sounds Speech and Audio Devices>Change the Speaker Settings>, and placing a
check in the "Place volume icon in the taskbar". Once I do that ALL my icons return
to the taskbar. This is a "workaround". Everytime I turn on my computer I have
to do this as the check mark disappears from the above.

Well, I seemed to have fixed it. I got tired of always doing the workaround, so
restored my computer to an earlier time (a few days earlier), then uninstalled both
the McAfee virus scan and Adaware. Restarted my computer. Everything was fine,
all icons there, etc. Then I reinstalled McAfee & Adaware, restarted, and everything
was normal. All icons showed up like they were supposed to. I restarted over and
over and never lost the icons from the taskbar.

I've been able to restore my icons and the taskbar by using Windows Task Manager
(the thing you get by doing a Control-Alt-Delete).
Under the Applications tab, close all instances of Explorer.
Under the Processes tab, select anything in the Image Name column called "Explorer"
and right click to get the "End Process" choice. End the process.
Now, under the File menu choice, choose "New Task (Run)" and type in "explorer."
Press the Ok button.
Works for me.

re: dissapearing icons and quick launch

When explorer crashes, Some icons don't come back in the systray (notification
area) and the quick launch toolbar disappears. To recover all icons log off and back
on. Or use a program like 12 Ghosts Tray Protect. Quick launch can be restarted through
the taskbar properties menu. (this is annoying) is there a way to automatically restart
quick launch when explorer restarts (and put it where you want it, left side, right
side, autohide, etc.)? Also, is there a freeware program that restores all systray
(notification area) icons after explorer restarts? Or
some other registry tweak. I've used the SSDP UPPD
kill fix but this problem still occurs sometimes. Logging off and back on ends all
applications so it is not the
preferred solution to dissappearing tray icons, just the only easy one i've run into.
Thanks to all who read and respond to this thread. I'm using Windows XP Pro with
SP1 and I'm not using NIS. Also, I don't have any problems with icons not showing
up after a reboot. For problems like that, try using VIS Boot or StartDelay. Thanks
again. PAJ
