no icons or taskbar on startup

When I boot my computer, I have no icons or taskbar when windows boots. I can bring them up by restarting explorer. I have scanned for viruses with my norton 2003, but nothing is detected. Something is wrong with my norton though. Autodetect will not come on, and when you enable it, it still won't come on. Also, I am getting an email protection error. Do I have a virus that I have yet to get rid of, or is there another problem?

Tip: Run a free scan for common Windows errors ad

You may indeed have a virus. The newer bad-boys are trained to turn off antivirus, spywareblockers and firewalls if needed. Can you get to the internet ? Go to and run housecall.antivirus.com. Also download Stinger utility from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and run it. If a particular virus is mentioned in the housecall scan, you may want the specific removal tool from Norton website. Norton also recommends turning off the System Restore (virus hide in these files and cannot be removed).

This problem can occur when you are infected with a virus that seems to be unreported
on symantec or any of the other anti-virus resources I've found.

If you can get to task manager, go to the Processes tab, and look for a process called
'SYSU.EXE'. If it's running, kill it.

Now, if your desktop suddenly returns to normal, then yes, you've got this virus.
You're not out of the woods yet. There is probably a folder on your machine called
'C:\Program Files\ddm'. Delete that, of course. You'll probably also want to search
your registry for the string 'ddm' and kill most of what you find. In particular
the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ddm, and anything under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
and/or RunOnce that refers to 'ddm' or 'sysu.exe'.

It took me a while to find all the pieces of this trojan/spyware/adware but here's a list of steps to remove it http://geekatwork.blogspot.com/2003_12_01_geekatwork_archive.html#107032650161440135

I am having the "no taskbar on startup" problem. Norton failed to detect any virus upon a complete scan of my system. It WAS found turned off when I first ran it. I also ran Housecall with the same result; "no viruses found". The Geek@work link redirected me to another site where I could not find a way to search for the archived file giving removal instructions for this virus. HELP! What do I do now?
