Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

WinXP
& Win98 File Sharing using IPX/SPX: I have an XP and win98 computer connected
in a simple network. I have Internet access on both and can share files/printers
using TCP/IP. I've followed the XP help instructions for changing the file sharing
protocol to IXP/SPX (On XP: install NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS and under advanced, click
off TCP/IP for file sharing) (On win98: del Microsoft File Sharing, add IPX/SPX protocol
and NetWare File Sharing service). Problem: win98 adding of NetWare File Sharing
also installs "Client for Netware Networks", which doesn't seem to have share-level
access, only user-level access (and wants a for list of users
and/or groups with permissions.) Anyway, now computers can't share files (tho both
still have internet access). At a loss from where to go from here. Any advice?

Make sure you have both computers working in the same workgroup. In Win 98, when
you right click on the NetNeighborhood choose properties. Choose the File and Print
sharing tab in the middle and check both those boxes (i.e i want to give others access
to my files). In the Identification tab, mak esure yoru workgroup name is in there.
Are you using a Router for this home network? In the access control tab choose
user level access with your workgroup name listed.

Forgot to mention- Yes, both computers are behind an Internet Router (NetGear RP619
- which, I believe, provides a firewall and assigns private IP addresses to all computers
behind it) and yes, both computers belong to the same workgroup. For the Netware
Client - Access control tab, User Level is the ONLY option (I'm used to using Share
Level with MS Client). Am I to understand that I can just type in the workgroup
name here and be done? (I think I tried that and got some warning message when I
tried to close that window)
thanks - Scott

I read your problem with interest as it exactly describes my experience today. Did
you find a solution?
I was looking to move to IXP for secrurity reasons - but failed as I too could not
set up user level access on the W98 system - that's when I turned to the internet
and found your message. My gut feel is that you need a complete NT like system to
do this (NT, W2000 or XP Professional) hence I don't think there is a solution for
our current configuration and I have gone back to TCP/IP....but if you know better....

Gerard

Gerard -
No solution found. I gave up the hunt and went back to TCP/IP, following Fermat's
Principle (path of least resistance).
Been happily unsecure ever since.
I don't know which is more annoying: Not being able to impliment the protocol on
an XP/win98 network, or not being able to install XP on the older computer (because
of Billy-Boy's one-O/S:one-Computer license structure)?!
