The PCI device that your computer has found is your scanner. The drivers for it
must not have installed correctly, because windows doesn't know what the device is.
If you are using the USB cable to connect the scanner, unplug it from your computer.
Uninstall all the scanner software and drivers, then reinstall the software. With
your computer still powered on, plug in the scanner USB cable. Windows will find
new hardware and want to install the drivers for it. Select the install drivers
from a specific location. Select the installation CD, then browse to the XP drivers
section on the CD. After you click on OK the drivers will be installed and your
scanner will be recognized and ready to work. Hope this helps.

I don't have the CD, I got the software from the HP site. I tried your suggestions
to no avail. I did install the scanner on my Toshiba laptop using the HP software
and the parallel
cable with no problem, but I can't install it on the desktop machine using the same
software. Thanks

That PCI simple comm controller usually refers to a card plugged into a PCI slot
that XP doesn't have a driver for. Are you sure this has anything to do with the
printer problem?
If your USB comes from a PCI card, I suppose it's possible. I never heard of a parallel
port coming from a PCI card, but I suppose it's possible. But from what you describe,
this PCI card would have to have a USB port and a parallel port. Do you have such
a PCI card? If so, you need to find a driver for it, or just ignore it. Toss the
card away if it causes trouble.
If your motherboard doesn't have USB hardware nor does it have a parallel port then
you would need a PCI card, but if you can't find drivers for the card you have, it's
not doing you any good.
Note this driver for the PCI card has nothing to do with a printer.

I'm a little surprised at the replies you've had as I've always understood this to
refer to modems - you live and learn. (But I'd still check out the modem possibilities
were I you :?)
