Question about 'What do I do with ''unknown'' devices in Device Manager?'

I have a question about What
do I do with "unknown" devices in Device Manager?:
I'm running windows xp pro on an msi k7n2g mb with nvidia chipset. The usb ports
only seem to recognize one device at a time. With the printer plugged in and everything
works with it, if I plug in my digital camera it won't recognize it. If I plug in
the camera without the printer, all is fine with it. When I check device manager
there are 5 unknown devices without yellow '!'. If I delete them, windows just puts
them back again. Does anyone know what's up??? I'd really like to be able to use
them both at the same time.

Update your motherboard Bios or contact the manufacturer. It may be a design flaw
of your motherboard.

sounds like usb ports
try installing the nForce2 drivers
your board has a bunch of extras in it that may be looking for drivers
- 3 audio ports in vertical
- 6 USB ports (Rear * 4/ Front * 2)
you can use either the live update from msi
or i believe these are the correct nforce drivers
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_3.13

I'm having the same problem. Can you be more specific about how to fix it. I downloaded
the drivers, but it didn't do anything. Do I need to run some kind of program?
Not sure what to do next.
Thanks,
Vic

the unknown devices are devices that cant find device drivers (usually called drivers)
so you have to find the drivers for the devices
try to update the unknown devices with the drivers you downloaded

Sorry, I meant that I downloaded the nvidia drivers. I don't have drivers for the
combo flash card reader. The manufacturer says there aren't drivers for the product
that XP is supposed to just recognize the device. CD\DVD drive seems to work, but
the flash card readers are recognized as un-known devices.
Only once of my USB ports seem to work, so I am making the assumption that I need
updated USB drivers for my motherboard, not drivers for the card readers.
I have the new drive plugged into the USB port on the motherboard not an external
port.
How do I get this thing going? Also, how do I get my other USB ports to work?

OK, I just installed the update you suggested. No change as of yet. Also, I am
running the MSI K7N2G motherboard.

im guessing this is yours
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=K7N2G-L
turn off your computer remove anything in your usb ports
go into windows
goto the device manager uninstall any usb related items (if your not sure ask)
reboot the computer go into your bios then disable usb
reboot again go into windows install any hardware it asks about
reboot go back to the bios enable usb
now boot into windows and install (hopefully) the usb ports
give it another reboot, if it installs any more hardware then reboot the computer
again
now hopefully you can plug in your flash card and it'll work
if for some reason it shows the flash card as unknown or with a yellow red or anything
different next to it then try using the usb drivers for win2k off your flash driver
cd

Forget anything before...
Install XP as normal...
Install M/Board drivers...
Install Service Pack 1...
Re-Insert M/Board drivers disk and it will let you update USB 2 drivers... All your
unknowns will be gone.... Eeeeeeeeezay

ok i'm using a MSI K7N2 delta series motherboard and i'm having the same "unkown
device" thing under the USB in device manager. i tried using your method but after
i install the service pack 1, when i put the driver disk back in, it doesn't give
me the option to finalise the USB 2.0 driver installation. so i can't use my USB
ports at all! anybody can help me out here?
thanks.

I have the same motherboard and HAD ;) the same problem. I'm now running XP service
pack 2 but I had the problem both before and after the update.
Problem, to clarify was as follows:
List of six unknown devices in the USB section of device manager (numbers may vary)
even though NO USB devices or external hubs were connected.
Lastest nforce drivers did not fix. Uninstalling all USB devices from safe mode did
not fix.
I simply disconnected all the external USB ports, i.e. the front panel and rear panel
USB ports, from the motherboard
After I rebooted, the remaining ports were all discovered and worked perfectly. I've
no need for all the ports as I used a hub but in another post I read, the author
had reconected his external ports and they worked.

i know im replying to an old topic but you can use unknown devices (and an updated
version of pcidevs.txt) to find out almost any unknown devices.
http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/
pcidevs.txt list (3rd from the top its a Big file)
