Upgrading from ME to XP

We're trying to upgrade a Sony Vaio PCG-FX220 from WinMe to WinXP Home. We get through about an hour of the process and then it suddenly pops up with a error message that it can't find windows/inf/biosinfo.inf - any ideas? We even re-installed Windows Me and then tried to upgrade from that and we got the same error message. Thanks for any help or advice you can offer!

Added note: We finished another round of installing and there is indeed no biosinfo.inf file to be found anywhere on the hard drive. Went to the Sony Support page for this model and they have a BIOS update but the update (called PHA2U0MNGZ.EXE) is only for a WinMe system which is fishy since the laptop came with a rebate for WinXP. We found the WinXP BIOS update (called PHA3U0XNG4.EXE) which of course says in big bold letters 'It is highly recommended to install this BIOS before upgrading to Windows XP.' We'll report back... I'll post our results so if someone finds this thru Google they'll know what's up.

I would format the drive and do a clean install, you will regret it if you don't. even if younmanage to install over Me.

Don't do anything but a clean install.

Upgrade fom ME to XP VERRRRRRYYYY BAD IDEA.....

You will not be happy and most likely your computer
will not work properly...

Don't do it.

You've been warned.....

Clean install only , and you better make sure your
computer can handle XP first....

Do you have a MINIMUM of 256 Megs of RAM..?
(512 is much better)

Are there drivers available for your make and model of
computer for Windows XP....?
Check the manufacturers website..
If not ,you're going to have even bigger problems...

I would run the XP upgrade advisor FIRST to make
sure your computer is compatible with XP....

I have to ask why is this a bad idea? That is how I did mine, although I wrote zeros to the hard drive first, format c: and put ME on (only the essentails) and put xp on. I had to do it this way because my ME are on restoration discs through Gateway. I did much reading on the subject and just about everywhere I read it told me that sometimes when XP upgrade asks you for the ME disc, it won't reconize restoration discs. This is the way I did mine and I've had no problems and I love it. How would you tell someone to upgrade to XP from ME with restoration cds? Is there a better way? Let me know so I know in the future if I ever have to re format again. Or are you speaking of a full version of XP Home Edition? Not an XP upgrade? Thanks LB

A few people get away with the upgrade, a few don't. Those that are speaking out,
tried the upgrade path, and after experiencing problems, reloaded with a clean install.
And all problems disappeared.

In your case - you had no real option.

that's sort of what i did? correct? when i first got xp upgrade, brought it home, hubby convinced me to just put it in and go from there, so i did. and i knew i made the wrong move. i had nothing but problems. i then completely re formatted (writing zeros to the hard drive, format c:, and etc.) added windows me and then xp upgrade and i haven't had any problems thus far. thanks for the reply lb

We purchased our HP XL946 desktop new a couple of months before XP came out. The blurb sticker on the machine says it is XP ready. We currently have 768 meg of RAM. Would you still recommend a clean install? Also, would it be easier to install Home edition or Professional, if we just upgrade?
