Question about 'How do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer?'

I have a related question about How do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer. What I want to do is figure out how to empty the old pictures that XP is caching somewhere. Whenever I open up a new picture using Win Fax & Pic viewer, every old picture is still available by clicking the forwrd and backward arrows. I can't find anything on the MS web site on clearing this history. Thanks

not sure exactly what your trying to do but if you right click on a picture like let's say for example in my documents and choose properties, then a dialog box comes up that says "opens with" and there is a button box where you can "change" what those type of files open with, if you click on change you can change it to another program. Like paint, picture it express, or something. I'm not sure on the history thing your speaking of, mine doesn't seem to be doing that. LB

How do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer? Intended For Windows XP only Once again, Microsoft isn't following their own rules. The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is set as the default image viewer for all sorts of file types in Windows XP. Unfortunately, choosing a new program as the default in the File Types window won't change this, and there's no option in the Windows interface that can disable this component. It's a really stupid design, and it takes a Registry change to fix it: Solution #1: Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE). Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ SystemFileAssociations\ image\ ShellEx\ ContextMenuHandlers. Delete the ShellImagePreview key. Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately. Solution #2: Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE). Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}\ shellex. Delete the MayChangeDefaultMenu key. Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately. LB

Interesting response. I changed the default viewer on all of my computers without all that hassle. It may be that MS has sent out an update to change that, otherwise it should be simple to accomplish.

To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you can unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done by opening a MS-DOS command prompt and typing this into it: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll . Set a restore point first.... To find any lost pictures do a wildcard search,(including hidden folders, and searching the whole computer) ie *jpg or *bmp or *png etc. Once rounded up, why not specify a default folder where uploads from your camera etc. are to be put.

While this will disable it, it doesn't mean you can assign files (like BMP) to something else - now NOTHING happens when you double click on a file... because unregistering this bit is really just a hack. I hate the morons at Microsoft!

I had this problem and what I had to do was right click on each picture (when it is being viewed in "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer") and then click "delete". This will remove the picture and place it in your recycle bin.

To begin with: Solution 1 is Not in my Registery, Solution 2 Did Not work, When I done a search for the value {e84 ___6066}. Found IT in HKEY_Local_machine\software\M$\Win$\ CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved Now should I delete it here, TOO ???????? Or is the unregistering the dll doing this? in this area? I would like to know more about Where M$ keeps the files, that it sees in this useless annoying software. email me direct for better communications PLEASE, Thank You................... To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, you can unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done by opening a MS-DOS command prompt and typing this into it: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll . The correct solution to this is as follows: Under each extension in HKCR (CLASSES_ROOT), for example - .bmp, the (Default) setting will point to a MimeType. Search for that MimeType under HKCR (e.g. .bmp's (Default) is "HKCR\Paint.Picture"). Look under that key's "shell\open" entry for a "DropTarget". From what I understand from MSDN, DropTarget is new as of Windows 2000, but was abused by XP. There should be a "Clsid" entry with the value of "{E84FDA7C-1D6A-45F6-B725-CB260C236066}" in there. The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is actually a COM Server and is what is pointed to by the DropTarget verb. Unregistering this (and any other COM Server) without understanding what happens is the worst thing you can do to the shell and your OS (namely leaving around dangling registry entries that slow down the entire OS). Instead, manually rename either the "Clsid" key or the "DropTarget" key to something like "Clsid_2" or "DropTarget_2" to fix the problem. The shell apparently looks at the "DropTarget" verb before the "command" verb. You haven't lost data and can revert if you don't like the change (assuming you can remember how the registry is organized between now and then).

that out! Hope that helps!
