Downloading Problems

I seem to have a problem here. My friend that lives nearby and he uses BT and gets NICE download speeds. 100kb+ and such. Me on the other hand I am trying to download stuff using it and I get 1-5 kb per sec. I get like 8 kb/s in UPLOAD speed but very crappy download speed. Normally I download from sites at 80 KB/s and sometimes higher. My DSL is connected from the phone jack to the external modem and from there to the USB port on my pc. I tried searching around and I found a site that shows what open ports you have and whatnot. I have ALL my ports on STEALTH. I have NO firewall up as I deleted Zonealarm pro, and when i goto Network connections and properties, the Firewall option is NOT on. My friend says the more you upload the faster you download but I left it downloading for 8 hours and came back and I was still getting 2kb/s He has been downloading stuff using that for months while I have just started. Does it save the amount you upload over time or something?

your friend has no idea what he's talking about, you don't get rewarded with a faster download by uploading more, no one is keeping track of your uploads and going 'oh this guy uploads alot, lets make his downloads faster.' and you're a fool for believing him. Seconldy bluetooth has nothing to do with downloading, bluetooth has a range of about 15 feet and it's used in the same sense as a cordless phone or the remote control for your tv, different technolgy but same idea, limited range wireless connection for connecting devices. You can't use bluetooth to download off the internet unless you're using a bluetooth enable pocket pc synced to a bluetooth enabled computer for example. So, your dilemma makes no sense the way you described it.

Okay... I have no idea wtf you are talking about... I never mentioned Bluetooth once in my post and I have no idea wtf it is. BT = BITORRENT I just want to know WHY all my ports are STEALTHED when I have NO firewall up at all because to me THAT is what is slowing me down from fast downloads on Bitorrent. Seeing as I am stealthed for no reason, I can't connect to seeds because I don't send them a response for no apparent reason.

Here is a list of things to check first: 1. Make sure all your phones are filtered and your modem is not. 2. Make sure the cord from the phone jack to the modem is no longer than 6 ft. long. 3. If possible use an ethernet cable to connect the modem and not usb. Usb is slower!! 4. Make sure your modem is at least 1 foot away from any electronic device. 5. download, install, update and run spybot s&d (get it here> www.security.kolla.de). 6. If you are too far from the phone company your speed will suck. 7. Old or worn out phone wires in your house will affect the speed. If you are still having problems. Call your ISPor post back here for help.

He doesn't know what he is talking about, that's why. Your problem might just be that your d/l sources are slow and not your hardware/configuration. I am not that familiar with BT but others such as emule often are affected by how much you are uploading, statistics are kept and you are scored, it depends on how others filter people in their queue. It can take days to work up the queue and get a decent dl speed. Try a bandwidth test with no other apps running to get a ballpark idea of where you stand and hopefully rule out a system problem. BTW some isps block commonly used p2p ports. http://www.beelinebandwidthtest.com/

I did spybot the other day and got rid of a million things but it didn't help. I have no idea how to see if my phones and modem are filtered =( Another thing you might want to know, why I might not be able to downlaod and do a bunch of stuff is that I cant even search in Yahoo; once I input something to search and press enter the "Page cant be found" page comes out, FOR EVERY SEARCH ENGINE, and for google the web page doesnt even come out, this has been happening for about 4 months already. It wasn't always like that.

Are you behind a firewall, router or hub? Also, Where your phones plug into the wall check to see if there is a little plastic filter plugged in to the jack then your phone will be plugged into that. If there is one on every phone you are good to go. If there is one plugged into the jack with the modem, then unplug it.

The phone line going from my external modem is going directly to the phone jack on the wall, I have no actual phone plugged into that jack just the modem phone cord. Also, my phone cord is more than 6 feet actually.

You might want to try changing it. Also, any phone in the house (not just with the modem) will cause a problem if unfiltered!!!
