Cannot get out to the internet.

Long story short, I hope. We have 2 Windows XP computers that share the same Cox Cable internet line using a Linksys EtherFast Router (BEFSR41 ver. 2). Has worked fine for just over a year. A couple days ago while attempting to copy a DVD on one of the computers (I'll call it computer 'A' and the other - computer 'B') a problem was encountered, the software vendor sugessted that by using msconfig to disable all startups, then reboot and try the copy again - it was successful. It seems when the Startups were enabled again that all programs were enabled not just the necessary ones and it was done while the ZA firewall was disabled. After rebooting the computer it worked ok, but after resetting everything back to "normal", and rebooting the computer would not go out to the internet and we received an error indicating "A Network Cable is Unplugged" (it wasn't). After trying a few times rebooting and also unplugging the computer and lettiing it sit for 15-30 mins and replugging and rebooting we still could not get out to the internet. Originally there were two entries in the Network Connections window but now only one - - 1394 Connection - LAN or High-Speed Internet - Enabled - 1394 Net Adapter. Computer 'B' has that entry plus one other - - Local Area Connection - LAN or High-Speed Internet - Enabled - RealTek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. Computer 'B' has access to the internet but Computer 'A' does not. We need help to get 'A' back to normal so that it has internet access. We would appreciate any help that we can get. Thank you, MaCarl

Did not help to get out to the net, no IP Address, no yellow or red devices and don't have to sweat MSBlaster yet.

Ya know..i,d try changing out that NIC...they,re cheap, and it would eliminate one more possible failure...did you use a toothpick and physically dump the Routers caps??...do that also...theres a very small Hole(Button) somewhere on the back of your router...unplug completely and discharge the caps and memory for @20secs...let us know ;)

We will do a full reset of the Router (will hold it for 30 secs). The computer I'm using to "talk" with you gets it's internet through the same Router - we have switched the locations of the data out cables from the router also. No place to get a new NIC tonight. We are perplexed as to why computer 'A' now only has one (1) entry in its networks connection panel instead of the two that were there before and computer 'B' has two entries. Shouldn't they be just about the same if not identical ??? Seems to be more software than hardware???

We do appreciate the help, I know it is very difficult to try and work on something
when you can't see it and check things out for yourself. The two entries are basic
entries for the Network and Internet Connections
portion of the Computer Settings. This is the Network
Connects page. A tile view would have two pictures
 - each has 2 computers attached with a "T" connector
and a "cable". The 1st is described as -
1394 Connection
Enabled
1394 Net Adapter

The 2nd is described as -
Local Area Connection
Enabled
RealTek RTL8139/810x FAmily Fast Ethernet NIC

Don't know how else to describe it, the forum does
not accept pictures. We will do another reset on the
Router (30 secs discharge) Thanks again, MaCarl
