Someone told me something about: a program that can send the ip address of my computer 
to a directory online, so I can find it from a different computer, which will allow 
me to access my computer from online. Does anyone know of such a computer???

You set up a (usually) free account with the DDNS service and establish a DNS name. (A DNS name is a unique name on the internet just like www.annoyances.org or www.micosoft.com. With the DDNS services, the uniqueness comes where the "www" would be. IOW, if it were available, you could choose jud.ddnsservice.com as your DNS name.) Then, you download and install a small program that runs as a system service under XP. It queries your system (if directly connected to the cable/DSL modem) or your router (if you are using a router) at regular intervals and reports to the DDNS servers. If your ISP changes the IP address (more common with DSL service than with cable modem service), the application reports the new IP address to the DDNS service, and then the DDNS service propogates the change thru the internet. The advantage is that you never have to know what your IP address is to access a server running on your system, you just have to know (for example) jud.ddnsservice.com. This is very useful for setting up ftp servers, www servers, or remote applications such as pcAnywhere or XP Pro's remote desktop. I have used www.no-ip.com for several years and have been very pleased, but I'm sure there are many others as well.
