Floppy drive not Reading or writing on XP

I have a 200 GHzA MD Atholon XP 24000+ with 512 MB RAM running Windows XP version 2002 service pack 1 I have downloaded all the patches. When I put a Floppy disc in the A drive the light does not come on. I click on the floppy drive in 'My computer' and the light comes on and the drive starts. EM The disk in drive A is not formatted do you want to format it now. It then trys to format it but is unable to do so. So I cannot get it to read a disc or write to a disc. I am using IBM 1.44mb discs which I have used successfully on other computers. I have checked the gray ribbon cable is in correctly. I have deleted the driver from the devise manger and restarted the computer to get it to recognise it. I have bought a new floppy drive and gone through the same thing with that one. When I boot up the computer the light goes on the floppy drive and then goes off as I would expect. I have uninstalled Norton virus protection and now use AVG 6 Please can you help

Pauline, This problem has been aired here several times. (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/r1068142310). It is also mentioned as an issue on the MS Website. They speak about a media type byte on the floppy. I have tried all the suggestions in both places, but have not found a satisfactory solution. One rather technical solution offered here some months ago involved registry edits. I have no problem doing the reg edits, but I could not find the key specified on my machines. I have this same problem on 7 machines with XP and have maintained one old laptop with W98 and a WiFi connection to allow me to pick-up the historical data from the disks. As a default in UK, Dell do not sell machines any longer with a floppy drive, I do not know if it is cost cutting, or they know about the problem!! Sorry to be so gloomy on this, I would also welcome a workable solution from anybody. John
