ISP password keeps changing

After installing xp over win98, which in turn was installed on a totally reformatted drive, all legal software, I used the internet connection wizard to enter my details. No matter how many times I change these details in the dialup connection dialog box, internet connections folder, i.e.6 tools/internet options utility, etc. I still end up with a sixteen digit no. appearing in the password box instead of the normal ten digits. Having configured my laptop not ten minutes previously which runs win2000pro and had no trouble I'm confused. The details entered are correct and were checked as I inputted them (for about the tenth time!) I don't think xp is anywhere as easy as '98 to configure, still I suppose Bill knows what he is doing. Please help.

They all show sixteen digits no matter what the password. A security thing. Makes it harder to grab the password.
