fatal crashes in Windows XP -atapi.sys

I am getting intermittent crashes in the general category of: Kernel_Data_ Inpage_Error the specific hex code changes a bit however from crash to crash - the manufacturer of the box (MICROPRO) ignores my email requests for help. (it's always atapi.sys) the rest of the code looks like this: STOP: 0x0000007A (0x0303DDE54, 0xC000000E, 0xF7795558, 0x0C6B860) atapi.sys - ADDRRESS F7795558 Base at F7789000, Date Stamp 3d6ddb04 Begin dump... At this piont the HD access light is on solid. Any thoughts?

Well, I know you need a modified atapi.sys to run a hard disk larger than 137GB.

If you have added a large HDD, this could be it.

If that's not it, then you could run the sfc /scannow command to have XP's system
file checker look at all the important system files and make sure they are not corrupted.

Wow! thanks for the quick response! My HD is 111GB I haven't added and hardware to the box. when I attempt sfc /scannow WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION wants me to load my SP-1 CD. I only have the recovery CD that came with the box. Is this what it wants? I downloaded an update to XP in October which is not on a CD. Is this an issue?

Manufacturer recovery CDs vary so much in their content that ther is only one way
to find out, insert the CD as see if the XP System File Checker can use it.

You'll want to read this MS TechNet article:

Stop
0x0000007A or KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

The article says that it's not uncommon for the problem to be caused by faulty memory
or by problems in the mass storage controller subsystem, which makes sense since
atatpi.sys (a mass storage controller system file) is noted.

Thanks Dan, I ran sfc /scannow with the OEM CD and it seemed to run but gave no results or any other info at completion - it just went away. I guess my next step is to find some diag software for memory and I/O controllers. Thanks again.

Thanks, guys...I'm having the same issue with the atapi.sys crashes and will do some checking based on your suggestions. JB

ERROR: atapi.sys is open or in use by another application

do a search on your computer for atapi

or may look for it your self in this location

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

once found, make a folder on your desk top and drag the file into this one new folder

now you can update your xp with sp1 / sp2

once upgraded your may delete this file...
dont worry! the sp1/spt installation will replace this file.

ENJOY!!!

This does not work on my computer, probably because the atapi.sys is in use. By what??

If you have Daemon Tools or any other virtual drive software installed you will get this error. Try uninstalling it first.

Hello! I have had similar problems (blue screen with Kernel_data_inpage_error, Stop 0X0000007A), but I don't know why. It might have been caused by a windows update. Could anyone tell me what to do? I'm not sure I understood the answers very well... :S Thanks a lot!!

Atapi.sys is causing a crash while using edit function in Adobe's Photo Shop Elements vesions 3 and 4. Anybody else with similar experience? Any suggestion for working around it? Many thanks.

I recently updated Adobe Acrobat or Reader and it installed Photo Shop Elements with it. I'd gotten the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR before I installed it, but its frequency has increased since. I've never used the program, however. I'll try uninstalling it and see what happens.

I already have XP Home SP2 installed and am all patched up, and I'm still getting this error. The most recent piece of software I installed is GoToMyPC. I also kept the computer on for several days at a time. Could this be part of the problem? I used to get this message when I had a faulty RAM memory chip in my computer, I took it out and replaced it with new RAM and haven't had the problem for about a year, until now. Could it be that the amount of memory allocated to my page file is too small? Thanks for any help I can get with this.

This Error can be caused by any software posing to be a "virtual" drive as atapi.sys is a hardware controller the error is random due to the majorty of the time the "virtual" drive does its job but when atapi.sys "figures out" that the hardware is not actually present in the system it gives the stop error like you riped the drive out while the machine was on. my fix was to uninstall any "virtual" drive and update windows hope this helps. tx

The initial error displayed on your BSOD "Kernel_data_inpage_error" refers directly to your cache file. Probable causes are either memory incompatability or not seated properly (if you have not added any additional memory to the system then it should not be compatability), HDD lead loose or HDD damaged, or a corrupt cache file. If you are compitant with the inside of your PC and are aware of the anti static precautions that need to be taken before you touch any electrical component inside your PC then you can check to make sure the cables to the HDD are seated correctly and make sure your memory is correctly seated. If this does not work then follow these instructions to rest your cache file http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810093

I recently installed an HP Media Vault to the home network and am now getting the Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error at the same stop, with the added technical information "Atapi.sys - Address F8592130 base at F8581000, DateStamp 41107b4d" Any thoughts on a cause or a cure? Thanks

I got a similar error when I added a new RAM of 1 GB to the existing RAM of 512 MB. I never experienced such problem before that. This could possibly due to the wrong speed matching of the RAM.

I got the same error message also. I've placed a 2gb ram along the existing 512mb. However, I only get this message when I am away from the computer for too long and when the top part of the laptop (I couldn't find the word :D) is not closed. Any ideas?

I'm having this problem on a Dell Optiplex SX280 micro tower. I tried the sfc /scannow but it wants a windows CD. Problem is the slimline sony dvd-rom doesn't read cd's or dvd's anymore. I swapped both 512mb sticks of pc2-3200 ram with a different brand of pc2-4200 ram, and still the problem persists. With two new sticks of ram, I don't see it possibly being a memory problem. I have a 1gb usb stick, can I copy the XP CD to it on my good computer and use that? I'll give it a shot. I did a chkdsk and also a defrag, no difference. I combed through the RunOnce, and msconfig startup items, an also checked winlogin\notify to make sure no spyware/trojans/viruses were loading that way. I removed some crappy toolbars with Hijack this, and Norton AV Gaming Edition does not detect any viruses. Another thing, it's just genuinely slow for a P4 3 GHz and 1 GB of ram. It has a Maxtor 160GB SATA hard drive in it with 112 GB of free space. Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all Windows updates except for IE8. The latest Dell Bios version A08 is installed.
