My volume control is gone. When I try to restore volume control in add and remove
programs I am told sndvol32.exe is missing. I cannot seem to find any information
on how to restore this file or my volume control panel. Can anyone help?

sndvol32.exe does not normally appear in add and remove programs. What do you mean
by "I am told?"
Have you used the file search tool to look for the file?

Likewise. Using search I found copies in .dll cache in both system32 and in "last
used". Now how to restore it?

This worked for me, except I copied the file from an XP disk to the c:\temmp directory
and expanded it from there.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact
disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this,
follow these steps:
Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press
and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting
automatically.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where
CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains
the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows
system files are located (generally C:\Windows):
CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe
Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.
For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains
the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt
(pressing ENTER after each line):
e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Type exit to quit the command prompt.
Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in
the notification area (if you selected this option).

I have a similar problem. No volume control icon in my taskbar, and I can't add it
by going through control panel etc.
I can only control volume by going through the control panel, and the most annoying
thing is my mute and volume control buttons on the side of my laptop (which I use
all the time) are now not working.
I have tried searching for sndvol32.exe and I do have it in system32, also just tried
expanding it from my windows XP cd, and it hasn't fixed the problem. Tried reinstalling
the relevant driver from a "Driver Recovery CD" that also came with the laptop and
again no luck. Any ideas anyone?

ALEX,
Did you find a solution? I notice this was posted in August and we're now in March
'07. I have THE SAME problem. I have the file sndvol32.exe but my system can't
find it. I suspect it has something to do with a PATH suddenly disappearing. Since
I am the sole user/administrator I can't understand how this can happen. I had sound
last night and today - after a restart - suddenly no sound and I get the error message
that the computer can't find the file. There it is sitting in the correct directory
but the computer can't find it.
Does anyone have an idea?

Wow. Rich, Ven's step-by-step solution seems so complicated.
I'm trying to figure out what it's doing with regard to what caused the problem in
the first place - resetting everything from the hardware seems so drastic - but isn't
the problem the fact that the file is there but the operating system can't see it?
Why would one have to reset all the hardware and drivers like that to fix it -and
how did it get broken?
Anyway - it gave me an idea, I simply restored my computer to the day before the
problem and it solved it. HOWEVER, Audacity was gone and so were all my vst plugins
which reside in another place on my system (Common Files). I've had them for a very
long time - long before the day before the problem so how in the heck would a restore
remove them?
I checked out the directory structure in a DOS window and AUDACITY'S directory and
the VST_PLUGINs just are not there! So I instantly undid my RESTORE and figured
I'd give the difficult procedure a try - but when I put it back, everything was still
missing.
I have spent the day trying to hunt viruses or malware..
I'm clean as a whistle. I just reinstalled everything - but first I redid the restore
so the sound would work.
So far so good, it's like nothing was ever wrong. Soon , maybe I'll forget about
what happened and recall it as only a dream. I mean, there is nothing wrong, no
weird programs, no new installs I can think of... Just weird.
I don't suppose this has ever happened to anyone...

Hi,
No, I'm afraid I never did find a solution. However, in December my hard drive completely
died and was replaced by Hewlett Packard under warranty so when I got the new one,
everything was back to normal. Well that was until 3 weeks later when the new one
then died! It was faulty. So I am now on my 3rd hard drive in the last 2 months,
and it has lasted about a month with no problems so far.
So 2 hard drives, and countless infuriating phone calls to absolute morons from HP
later, everything seems fine.
Still, once the warranty runs out in a year's time I'll be looking to get a new laptop,
and it certainly won't be an HP!

Line #12109: sndvol32.exe => 8/04/04 8:00a 56489 \I386\SNDVOL32.EX_
Line #12110: sndvol32.hlp => 8/04/04 8:00a 1283 \I386\SNDVOL32.HL_

OKAY LISTEN HERE I THINK I MAY HAVE SOLVED IT!!!!
XP users look here
right okay
press the start key + R to bring up the run menu
now search depending on what your user hard drive is called you will alter the letter
(mine is C:\)
so i would type
c:\WINDOWS\system32
go into there and search for a file called "dllcache"
(on mine the test is blue for some reason)
search for the "sndvol32.exe" file
now right click and copy the file
go Back into the "system32" folder (c:\WINDOWS\system32)
then simply paste this file into here.
the control panel was being dumb and the file was in a different place on mine.
if this does not solve the problem then i try to e-mail you the .exe file if i can
do that.
or try looking in the same place but on a backup CD or hardrive. (in the dllcache
folder)
hope this helps!

Select "Show hidden files and folders"
Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" (click Yes

Depending on your technical skill:
Simple: copy this file from a friend's PC (with the same version of XP that you have
of course) and paste it as described earlier in this thread.
Moderate: extract the file from your XP installation CD
Complex: do a repair/install of XP (a bit drastic, and backup your data first).
