Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'

I've tried several of the methods suggested in this forum, but my Taskbar is still
invisible on boot-up, and I have no desktop icons. Ctrl-Alt-Del launches the Task
Manager, and most apps seem to run correctly, but Windows Explorer won't launch.
I'm on a laptop, and scanreg doesn't appear to be installed on it. Using F8 to launch
the last known good configuration doesn't help, because Windows thinks everything
is hunky-dory. This condition started just after I received a message on boot-up
saying the Registry had been damaged. I've contacted the manufacturer of the laptop,
but who knows whether they'll answer? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

If Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up the taskmgr... Then click File, click New Task (RUN...)...
Then type explorer.exe and press enter... I've seen this commonly on our network...
As we use SMS to push out updates (anti-virus definitions, new apps, etc...) and
not all the pc's are setup the same, meaning many pc's have been around for years
with older configurations... so the updates don't always work... but the explorer.exe
tip above should open to the desktop if the OS isn't completely hosed.... Best of
Luck...

Thanks for trying. I had already spotted that suggestion in another message in this
Forum, and had tried it. Sadly, it doesn't work. I tried it a couple of different
ways: by typing "Explorer" and "Explorer.exe" directly, and also by selecting the
Windows Explorer item from the list of icons in my Desktop folder. The Hewlett Packard
help desk (it's an HP laptop) suggested running chkdsk in /R mode. Their instructions
on how to do this didn't work, but I was able to figure it out. I ran chkdsk in /R
mode by setting it up in Task Manager and then rebooting. That didn't help either.
Can anyone make other suggestions? Thanks! --JA

I have the same problem. I'm not able to run any tasks using task manager.
I've tried system restore but there are no dates to choose. I have tried to reinstall
windows twice but that doesn't work. I live overseas and can't ring Dell for tech
support.
Help!!!!

>H.P hmmm.If you can get a hold of or have a set up disc from any laptop w/ xp .
You may get the option to repair at boot up. by pressing 'R'
Oh Also if i am not mistaken H.P partitions their hard drive With a complete Op.
System recovery. Besides the System restore that xp offers in windows .
At boot press whatever it takes to get in bios . Flip across the top to BOOT, Enter.
Arrow down to Hard drives Enter. If it displays two numbers that look alike except
for the last two digits your in luck if not just curse out my name to feel better
. One may have (AA) and the other(AB)? Whatever it may be switch em and make it the
first hard drive and the first boot . Or heh heh .Press F10 at boot ?i am just having
flash backs to HP days and it aint Happy. Good luck sorry if i cant help

I had the same problem…I got it fixed…Win-XP… Due to a power failure, the computer
was rebooted, but without desktop icons, and taskbar and start menu (the taskbar
didn’t respond from control panel). The icons were back quite easy, using “restore
my last good setting…” I tried everything that was posted on the internet (and really
everything, the all 9 yards), but no luck. I read in one forum that the Microsoft
support person suggested to reformat the drive and reinstall XP. I was very close
to doing so, but the story is this. I could see the taskbar and start menu in “Safe
mode” (the icon in control panel was working as well). I remember that while trying
to install Win-XP, I got a message that nVidia (VGA controller driver) didn’t pass
Windows logon???!!! I checked the nVidia manager icon in safe mode and it didn’t
work (disabled by “Safe Mode”). The taskbar and Start menu worked, and vis versa
in normal mode. Therefore, I uninstall my VGA driver (nVidia) and what do you know
it worked!!! I reinstall nVidia and all is fine now. I think the safe mode can tell
a lot about your system, and can use as a to locate the problem. Good luck Raz
