A Runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug?
Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 5:52 pm Posted by Forrest
(41 messages posted)
I keep getting this pop-up error from IE 6.x on Windows/XP Pro on different pages
that says "A Runtime error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line: 554 Error:
Object required". I have no idea why this happens - it seems isolated to one machine
(laptop) I use.
At first I thought it might be due to something that Spybot Search & Destroy might
have done, but I removed the blocks and it still happens.
Anyone run into this annoying annoyance? :)
Thanks.

Open Internet Explorer - click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced. Make sure
Disable script debugging is ticked and Display a notification about every
script error is unticked then Apply and OK your way out... Carl

they have an annoying habit of appearing... Windows updates for Internet Explorer
sometimes do it... Carl

Oh yeah ;-(
So we've ticked/unticked the relevant advanced options boxes. and we can choose to
see or not see the page error message. You know what the web page does not display
and we don't get any advice. If we display the page error it summarises the errors
that occurred one at a time under the allow script debugging.
This problem has occurred since I installed the 'Wooonnddeerrfullll' Microsoft Visual.Net
2003 Professional package. I could strangle Bill Gates (Metaphorically speaking of
course).
The main source of annoyance is that I can no longer access the Web Pages on my DLink
504 ADSL Modem/Router as it now does not keep Bill's Sh..ty Software happy. BTW
don't advise me to upgrade the firmware cause then the modem continually locks up.
All I want is a way to nobble the Gates Effect

After installing Microsoft Office 2003, both the “A Runtime error has occurred…”
problem and the access to Web Pages by clicking on the Links problem started. Uninstalling
and reinstalling did not help. The script debugging fix works for the “A Runtime
error”, is there a fix for the linking problem?

Ken

Carl,
So far I think you deserve an award. I was getting the runtime error message since
yesterday and I have only had this computer since January. I bought a new system
because I was tired of getting error messages on my old system and the vendor tech
support was never able to fix the situation which was more annoying than anything
else.
So I was very upset when it started happening on my new system. Four calls to tech
support and each one with a different way to fix problem, none of which worked.
I finally typed my problem into google and found this web site with your suggestion.
So far, so good.
However, if I checked the DISABLE SCRIPT DEBUGGING and unchecked DISPLAY NOTIFICATION
does this mean I still have problems and now I just don't know about them? I don't
really understand all this.
I found explanations on other websites but they are very technical.
Sincerely,
Phoebe

Hi Phoebe, yes - it means the errors will still be occurring but you just won't see
them. But don't worry, the problems are actually with the websites themselves - not
your computer. It's to do with the way the code is written for the webpages, if
the code is a little "sloppy" then it can cause problems with your web browser. The
other thing that can cause those runtime errors to occur is when you use a popup
blocker to block pop-ups that a lot of websites use these days. Regards, Carl

Oh my goodness. Hp could have saved me a huge waste of time by knowing a smiddgin
of what you know. I am so upset by what they put me through, I am going to try to
do something about it.
For gosh sakes, just the fact that you say the problem is NOT with my computer but
the web sites has saved me from going bonkers.
Hp needs to put your solution and explanation of the problem in their knowledgebase.
Thanks again,
Phoebe

I have recently been having the runtime error on various websites that I know should
not have been throwing up the error.
When I disable Norton Internet security the problem goes away. On closer inspection
the setting causing the problem was advert blocking - thought I would share this
in case anyone else had this problem running Internet Security.

Problem occurs when javascripts or java something runs. I have windows 2003 and office
2003 (if it is of any use) and had this problem when accessing web interfaces of
network devices and other sites having java something. I understand IE 6 on 2003
has some problems with native support for Java. I could not work with many java based
interfaces of network devices.
Well what I did was to first install a proper java (sun jre 1.4.2) which made java
work but still got this message and then I deleted internet temporary files
It appeared that IE used older versions of the page I was accessing, cashed locally.
So Java installation did not fix the problem, just improved it, only after I deleted
cashed files everything worked.
Sorry for my bad English :-(

Hi Ken,
The problem with the blanks windows when opening links can be fixed by going to ms-dos
and typing:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
press enter and the command should complete and sub windows will open properly -
worked a treat for me : )

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab, click Delete Files, and then click OK. Also, rename the Web
page and remove apostrophe.

Also please be informed that There are three other reasons why these problems occur.
The first is that the web page author made some programming error. The second reason
may be that you are running a pop-up killer that closes pop-up windows so fast that
the script on the web page fails. The third is that you might have some adware or
spyware installed on your computer that opens the script error pop-ups.
How to disable script and runtime errors
You can configure Internet Explorer to ignore these script and runtime errors. Please
follow this step-by-step guide:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click on Tools, then on Internet Options.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. Look for the "Disable script debugging" line and put a check mark in the box.
5. Now look for the "Display a notification about every script error" line and remove
the check mark in the box.
If you still get the script or runtime error messages after disabling them in Internet
Explorer, the problem might be that you have some unwanted spyware or adware installed
on your computer. We recommend that you scan your computer with Bazooka Adware and
Spyware Scanner which seems to be frequently updated. SpyBot is also a great spyware
scanner.

You might want to double-check the advanced settings. According to Carl, "Make sure
Disable script debugging is ticked". From what you are saying, it does not have
a checkmark, but should.
